Can anyone tell me what's different about the Gold version and if the differences are worth not being able to play in full screen?
This question / problem has been solved by bevinatorimage
1. Gold has voice acting, but the voice acting is terrible.
2. Gold has a different set of portraits, but many people prefer the original portraits.
3. Combat text scrolls by too fast to read in Gold, making it difficult to determine whether you're doing well or poorly in a fight.
4. Diplomacy doesn't function properly in Gold. Regardless of how many times you successfully use Diplomacy on a wandering NPC, they will never talk or trade with you until you perform a service for their faction. If you've imported from Bane, this may make it impossible to get certain quests or talk to certain NPCs.
5. Gold has an automap, allowing you to see your progress with one key press instead of several. You'll still need a Journey Map Kit, though.
6. As mentioned, Gold doesn't run in fullscreen.

All in all, the DOS version is generally superior unless you really enjoy the voices.

Thanks, I could less about that so I will go with the DOS version.

Oh my, for no one? Should we petition GOG to include that as a compatibility notice?
Did Wizardry 7 EVER support fullscreen?

From what I remember it was one of those early Windows ports where they wanted the Windows GUI front and center, constantly.
There's a big difference in screen size of the two. Gold has about 3 inches or so of black border around the party screen. Dos has the full screen where the party (3 on each side) and the game play area take up the whole screen. There are no borders.

I beg to differ. The narrator sounds exactly as that in Disciples: Sacred Lands, which I found to be quite professional and helped set the tone for that dark fantasy story (or set of 4 stories). Most of the other examples of voice acting in Wizardry Gold are more amateurish, but the narration, which represents the overwhelming majority of the voice acting that you'll hear in the game, is actually top notch.

It's funny, but when I first heard that narrator back in 1995 or therabouts, I couldn't believe how weak the voice acting was.
But I recently heard it again on YouTube and now it didn't sound particularly bad.
I guess I have been desenitized to bad bad voice acting the past 18 years...
Bloody hell. Are you telling me that I can either run GOLD in crappy little window, or DOS in full screen, but in GERMAN?! Should I go dig up my old copy of the DOS in english instead?
No, this has been mentioned previously, but the DOS W7 english copy is under extras. Not the most intuitive place, but it's there
OMG, thank you mate. I was getting desperate. Phew!

I see it but I can't seem to get it to launch, I can't stand the little tiny window the "GOLD' version uses so what is the trick to use the orignal DOS version?
Well I figured it out apparently by installing the DOS version it created a GOG game folder outside the program (x86) folder where the gold version was installed which was where I was looking.

I have imported Wizardry 8 portraits into Wizardry 7 Gold.
Here's the video showing the results and other info.
Download links are in the description.

I really don't get why are the portraits one of the main reasons for not playing the gold version since you can change them...
they are just 256-colour indexed bmps in the game's folder.

Non-human-like skinned portraits were converted automatically to the indexed format, the human-like skinned ones had to be converted manually and painstakingly (because automatic conversion yielded either brown, red, orange or yellow rather than a caucassian skin colour)

Edit: I am not monetizing that video.
