So I started game on wizardry 6 and had a lvl 4 elf mage with 28 magic points in fire, 21 in water, 16 in earth, 11 in holy. My mage was very helpful so far in wizardry 6.

In wizardry 7 I made a mage but accidently made him a dracon. He is lvl 4 and has 8 magic points in fire, 10 in earth, and 11 in water. He also couldn't learn the fireball spell which in wizardry 6 I was able to learn. Is it normal my mage is so much weaker in wizardry 7 compared to wizardry 6? Or did I make a huge mistake by making a dracon mage?
Dracons make perfectly serviceable wizards. Likely it's just due to the way you've allocated your skill points. You need around 27 in Thaumaturgy to be able to cast 3rd level spells like Fireball. If you make sure to put a few extra points in Piety and Vitality at character creation (14+ in each) you'll get a mana regen bonus, which also increases the number of spell points you get every level. If you concentrate points on Oratory and Thaumaturgy in the beginning rather than spreading points around to multiple skills, you'll become powerful very quickly.

Lizardmen get a mana regen penalty which makes them poor spellcasters, but Dracons work just fine.

Perfect, thanks! I thought piety was for priests so I dumped my points into intelligence and only had 9 piety.
