I got a question about this guy. After finally getting my Wiz 8 to work with audio I decided to do a full run from Wiz 6-Wiz 8. Progress was slow buuut I finally beat Wiz 6 and got the bela and pen ending. So I fired up my Bela ending and started near Ukphyr on Wiz 7 and went straight there and did the trainings and whatnot. After that I went to the clearing to see K'Borra, but for some reason K'Borra always attacked me.... he got a "glimmer of recognition" and just went kapowow on me. Which brings the question, I thought you could get a quest from him? How to stop him from attacking you?

Thank you

K'Borra's reaction to you is based on your faction standing with the T'rang. Ratings go from -100 to +100, but you can't actually see them ingame. Ordinarily, your faction standing with them would be 0 or thereabouts when starting a game, but because you went with the Bela ending and started with the Umpani, your rating with them is around -90, IIRC. (Your rating with the Umpani, on the other hand, will be 80 or higher.)

In order for K'Borra to not attack you immediately, your rating needs to be at -25 or higher. You can get that by going to Nyctalinth and doing H'Jenn-Ra's first quest of talking to Shritis, and then telling Shritis you're willing to take vengeance on the Umpani. This will ensure that your faction rating with them is at least +0. Alternatively, you can hunt down D'Rang T'Rang and repeatedly bribe/truce him until he's willing to talk to you. If D'Rang will talk, then K'Borra won't attack immediately. Neither of these options are very easy at the start of the game, however.

Honestly, it's not really worth it to do K'Borra's quest anyway. K'Borra tells you that H'Jenn'Ra will give you 10,000 gold as a reward, but you never actually get anything other than faction rep. And T'Rang faction isn't really used for much.

Cheers, that's an awesome reply Bevinator. I tried to do a walk to New City from Ukphyr, I did get there..... but I was disappointed when I did get to New City I was basically steamrolling everybody due to heavy grinding on the road from Ukphyr to Munkharama?(sp?) to get pass the Komodo Dragons. So I started a new game and just straight tell Sgt. Balkhara(sp?) that I didn't see any T'rang patrol when he told me to investigate the forest and went straight to New City without too much of a fuss (with 5200 less gold though from the payment. I'll live with that :D).

Again thank you for that answer. It certainly bring light to why K'borra was so intent on beating me.

One question: How did you figure this out? How did you figure out that faction ratings exist, that they work on that scale, and that you need at least -25 to do that quest?

The Cosmic Forge editor allows you to view your savegame info, including faction standings and NPC standings that aren't viewable ingame. It also allows you to view/edit the dialog and scripts for NPCs and other encounters. The scripting is all spaghetti code, unfortunately, but that's not really surprising considering how old the engine is. Having a faction rep of -26 or below simply jumps you to a hostile script block instead of a friendly one.

The existence of faction ratings isn't really a secret, though. One of the reasons Wizardry Gold isn't recommended is because there's a bug that prevents faction ratings from being improved through NPC bribes and truces. So if you have a negative rep for whatever reason, you can't actually talk to any of their NPCs until you've done an actual quest for their faction. Since importing a save from 6 gives you a nonstandard array of faction reps, it's easy to get stuck in Gold. Taking the normal "grab the pen" ending gives you a mildly negative Rattkin rep, for instance, which means you can't meaningfully interact with any Rattkin anywhere until you've actually gone to the Ruins and been nice to Blindmeis. It sucks.
