The game starts like in slow motion. The intro (green book folding open) is slow and I can't do anything with the game before it showed all the game credits, which takes more or less 5 minutes.
Once the credits are played, I get the game menu. I only tried the character menu to create a character, but also this seemed to go in slow motion.

I have a fairly new computer, Win 7 64b, Nvidia GTX 570, 16 GB RAM.

Any idea how to achieve smooth gameplay (and not have to wait 5 minutes before I can start using the game).
I already tried compatibility mode (XP SP3) but that didn't solve the issue.
Use the DOS version instead and crank up those CPU cycles with DosBox.
The Windows version is bugged (diplomacy not working), the "improved" artwork is ugly, and the voice acting is cringeworthy. IIRC there's also some issue with the text scrolling too fast on modern machines. The only advantage to Win 7 Gold I know is a better automap.

IIRC the whole intro always play if you chose New Game.

Wiz Gold is horribad - ugly, laggy and with terrible voice acting and music. Don't waste your time.

The original is million time better and more playable.
The voice acting in Wiz Gold ranges from professional (the narrator) to the amateurish (many of the NPCs). I enjoy it, as I do the enhanced graphics. I am having issues starting Wiz Gold, too, but intend to stick with it as opposed to reverting to the slightly less polished original Crusaders of the Dark Savant game.
Thanks for the feedback.

I'll try the vanilla version tonight. I hope it will work better then the Gold version.
I just imported my fledgling party from Wiz6 to Wiz Gold, and was pleasantly surprised to find that their equipment for the most part transferred over! Most of the portraits were different, including of sexes opposite the characters to which they were assigned, but I figured out how to change the portraits that were more appropriate for each character!
DeadlyRamon,

How does Wiz Gold behave on your pc. Is it also in 'slowmotion' like on my system, or does it react as it should ?
What are exactly the issues you have with starting the game ? Does it also take 5 minutes of credits before you actually see the menu ?
I really like the MIDI music in WIz Gold. Back in 1996 when I first played it, I was using an Acer Pentium 120 MHz with 16 megabytes of RAM and some cheap 2d ATI card with maybe 512k of video RAM. The sound card was some generic Soundblaster clone, which got the job done, but wavetable synthesis at the time was for hardcore enthusiasts only, so I made do with MIDI music that sounded more like the Commodore 64's SID chip (which I still love) than actual recorded instruments.

Needless to say, the MIDI music sounds even better 17 years later!

I closed the game during the credit screen the first time I launched it, and then when I launched the game again, it went to the menu/title screen in short order.

My only complaint thus far is the combat speed. Even at its slowest setting (100) does the text scroll by much too fast for me to keep up with it. This is in fact so annoying that I will shelve the game for now and just import my party over to Wizardry 8, which I hope is working much better, and will return to Wiz Gold if that issue is ever resolved.

Ah, just as I thought then. GOG was unable to fix the text speed problem. They should mention this to potential customers though since one of the draws for many of us is getting a working version of Gold in modern OSes.

or just use the DOS version of 7..I really don't know why GOG decided to stick it in the extras instead of just putting it in the actual release and Gold in the extras since Gold has more issues the the DOS version does.
Is it really that bad?
Yes, the music and portraits are awful, but I've ripped MIDI files from DOS version and replaced new music with them.
(I could share them, but for some reason I cannot post links.)
Also, portraits are plain BMP, so it's possible to replace them with anything - portraits from DOS version, from Wizardry 8 or your own drawings. :)
I like voices, since these give the game charming B-movie feeling. But it's possible to turn them off.
So, the only drawback is broken Diplomacy.
Diplomacy or automap? I choose automap.

The DOS version has a semi-automap, too, you just have to activate your Journey Map Kit instead of hitting the map button.

I believe Vagabond, who helped test the game, was claiming that GOG had fixed that issue, though.

The only time the combat text is ever slow enough for me to actually read a line is when a monster throws or shoots something at me. For all other attacks (spells and melee) does it just zip by in a flash. I'll patiently wait for GOG to figure out a way to fix that as I play other games in the meantime!

Be sure to send Support a message about that, too.
