bevinator: If you're using the DOS version, there is no automap. To access the map, you first need to acquire a Journey Map Kit. (If you're starting new, there's one on the beach south of you, past the sound of snapping bones...) Then, from the main party screen (NOT the inventory screen) click "Use" and activate the Kit. This will bring up the map.

If you're on GOLD and the automap isn't working, then I'm not sure what to tell you.
