Hi, whenever I try to start Wizardry 8 on my computer, I get a "Wiz8 has stopped working" before anything even starts.

I have the latest drivers, I have the june 2010 dx redist installed, I do run with administrator right and XP compatibility mode and the game is installed outside my program folders.

The game does however work on my laptop. However, my laptop is not convenient to use on a daily basis and not a replacement for my desktop.

Edit: Fixed it!

It would seem that the installer for some reason installed a secondary, broken version of the game in addition to the actual install, which somehow interfered with the launch of the legit install.

Found out only because it also happened to someone else: http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?3536-Wizardry-won-t-run-on-my-win-7-64-bit-system

So it seems the installer might be mucking up? Once might be something random, but two times with the exact same reason and result?)

Edit: Definitely something wrong with the installer, reinstalled to fix a different issue and the game did it again.

Hi!

Similar problem here.

Today I've installed Wizardry 8 on my Windows 7 64-bit machine and it crashes immediately at startup (event APPCRASH, Wiz8.exe).

I used version 2.0.0.6 of the Setup to install the game.

Is there a plan to provide a fix for this issue so that it will run on Windows 7?

Regards

Just so you know,

English installer version 2.0.0.6 works fine on my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop.

Answeer these in order;

Q1, Have you got a different language pack installed?

Q2, Are you running with admin rights?
Having admin rights on your account is not a guaranty... you still need to install outside the programs folder & or right click the setup icon and select run as admin.

Q3, Have you got any invasive software installed i.e. Google Chrome etc?
Don’t want to un-install your conflicting software then you can get around most of this stuff by installing from windows safe mode

Q4, system specs please?

Q1: There is only one language pack (english)
Q2: Yes, but the exe still crashes
Q3: If it's not running because of a particular web browser etc. I would guess that GOG has print a special hint on their website
Q4: standard system, intel i7, Radeon HD.

I think the wiz8.exe should never crash, no matter on which system. Instead there should be warning can't run on this computer because of whatever.
Wiz8 isn't going to be able to warn you about conflicts because it was coded long before the things that might now cause a conflict.

Those other things probably aren't going to be on the lookout for Wiz8 because of how infrequently it will actually turn up on a system.

Could you look at the crash report and see what sort of error it's listing and which components are involved? That might help to narrow down the problem.
i have the same problem trying to run it on vista, so i don't think it is a windows 7 issue.

I'm having the same problem. Not sure how that thread fixes it. I only saw mention of a second wiz8 file. Could you go through the step that fixed it for you?
Could someone post a solution to this?? I'm having the exact same problem and I've tried everything practical.

Moreover, could someone pass me the wiz8_fix.exe?

Same issue here on Win7 x64. Tried everything (admin, reinstall DXSetup in safe mode, reinstall drivers, etc). No go on win7.

BUT it works without issues on Win8 x64 (well, 8.1 beta) on same machine (dual boot). I have NO clue what's the issue on Win7. So, since I never use Win8, I'm still trying to fix this. Will do more research & try to find this wiz8_fix.exe and report back if I find it.

EDIT: Turns out the wiz8_fix.exe is right here on GoG :)

http://www.gog.com/support/wizardry_8/wizardry_8_does_not_launch

Ran the application from my download folder & it fixed it. Now works. Wish there had been a message on the installer telling us to download this fix if the game didn't work. Still, after 1-2 hours, I finally got it to work on Win7 x64.

/cheers

Did somebody have a fix for orginal non GOG.com (yes, from CD) version of the Wizardry 8?
This fix from GOG support for GOG.com only versions says that my game is not installed.
Hi guys, hoping people still look at this forum.

As with other posts, Wizardry 8 has suddenly stopped working completely. I've played it off & on over many years on this PC, with the same installation, most recently some time this year (2016). After <can't remember> months of not playing, I went back to fire it up again recently, and the game completely failed to load. Like, no black screen, no attempt to change the display, simply about a half-second of the blue spinning circle around the cursor after double-clicking the .exe, and then nothing. Event Viewer doesn't even log an event upon attempting to run the programme, let alone an error to try to unpick. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit with a Geforce GTX 570 GPU. Not sure about sound card (or if I have one apart from onboard sound) but Device Manager shows Nvidia HIgh Definition Audio, Realtek High Definition Audio and NVidia Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM).

Non-exhaustive list of things I've tried, all of which have the same result:

Running in admin mode

Running directly from the .exe file in the installation path

Uninstalling and re-installing directly from the CDs

Moving the entire Wiz 8 directory to the root C:\ drive (apparently this helped with some Steam installations)

Experimenting with every combination of 3D/sound config in 3DSetup.exe, and compatibility modes in the Wiz8.exe file itself

Turning off antivirus, firewalls, Software Protection service, User Account Control

Running the .exe from the (admin mode) command prompt

Going back to a GPU driver that I know worked last time I played it

A bunch of other fixes suggested on various forums such as disabling XYZ file (renaming to .old) etc

None of these can get even the slightest twinge out of the programme. This is with a fresh install straight off the CDs, to a machine I've played it on for years, with no hardware changes, using exactly the same combination of 3D/sound config and compatibility modes that I've successfully played it on for years. The only thing which got the slightest reaction was ticking some of the settings in compatibility mode: run in 256 colours, run in 640 x 480 screen resolution etc (I never used these when it was working previously). That earned me a black screen as it tried to at least change the display upon launch, sometimes with a change back to the desktop with the reduced resolution settings, before it failed and went back to normal display. What this tells me at the very least is that the PC is registering that you have tried to execute the programme - the first process that must run is changing the display, but beyond whatever the second is, it's not happening.

The only thing I can possibly think of is that there has been a Windows update which is somehow screwing with it - unless something on the CDs has spontaneously corrupted, it's the only reason a completely fresh install suddenly won't work on a machine that has worked previously (and even then, that wouldn't explain why the files already installed on the PC suddenly also failed). But without knowing which update (I can't remember exactly how long ago I played it so it could be any time in the past 4-5 months), I don't want to go peeling back every Windows update until the game works (which may still not fix it).

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Ossie1972: As with other posts, Wizardry 8 has suddenly stopped working completely.
Downloaded and installed it just to see, running Win8.1. I've been playing it via Steam (those summer sales lead to some serious library duplication) recently, and sure enough, the GOG version isn't working for me either. So I checked to see which files are different; the three glide .dll files are different, as well as the nglide_config executable (Steam is v1.04, the GOG version is 1.02). So I copied them from the Steam install directory to the GOG one...and it still didn't work.

I don't have time right now to check out the registry, but there's a problem for sure, and it doesn't seem to be as easy as replacing a .dll or two, unfortunately. There are about 8 more files in the GOG install directory than the Steam one, but a few of them should have no effect.

Not really a fix for you, sorry. Just a little more info. :/
(Using Windows 10 here)

A friend of mine suggested that I go into properties and under compatibility take the option to run it in an earlier version of Windows. That seems to have fixed it for me.

I just started trying to play the game for the first time and I'm having the exact same issue. No matter what I have tried I could not get the game to even start. Eventually though, on a whim, I downloaded and tried running the game through the GOG Galaxy client and it now works! For whatever reason though it only works through the GOG Galaxy client - I still can't get it to run manually no matter what I try. This is really strange and I really hope GOG will look into this issue because I'd rather not have to use the GOG Galaxy client to play my game.
