...and am I in for a good story? honestly, I need two things from any RPG: combat that is not mindless and a story that will captivate my mind while I drift off to sleep.

If you want story Wiz 6 is probably the best game to start with. I haven't played 1-5, but from what I've read they don't really have much of a story, while Wiz 6 is the beginning of a story that spans three games.
EDIT: but of course, that is a moot point, since GOG doesn't carry 1-5, so definitely start with Wiz 6.

8 is the best game engine and that is what I'd recommend to any new player just starting out.
