I have searched high and low for the answer to this, but I just cant find an answer. When you Identify an item it shows the curse and special power if there is one present, however I only see Curse/Power: @?&& How can I identify that? ~.~ I think I have read about at some time but I cant remember where. :(

In-game the only way to find out what the special powers are is to activate the item, thus using up most items (some items can be activated twice).
Yes, it's annoying.
The Artifacts skill will help you identify what powers (if any) an item possesses. Failing that, the Identify spell will also work, and will also reveal the nature of any curse on it.

In most cases, the curse is that the item can't be removed, which may or may not actually be a problem. (If you plan to wear that armor piece anyway then it doesn't really matter, and depending on the character, being stuck with a cursed weapon might not actually be a problem either - one of the best swords in the game is cursed this way and it's still a go-to weapon for many characters.)

Using an Uncurse effect (the Remove Curse spell or the Bishop's special ability) doesn't strip the curse off of the item. It just allows the item to be unequipped - although if you enter dialogue/combat/etc before doing so then the item becomes stuck to the character again.
Cursed just means the item can't be unequipped without a Remove Curse spell. There are several really good cursed items that have no other drawbacks whatsoever. There are a bunch of really nasty ones, though, which can have to hit penalties or HP drain. Others have both positive and negative qualities.

The items you get from passing through the Land of Dreams are all cursed, for instance. But some of those items are the best in the game, and you might never even WANT to unequip them.

For the special powers, each string of characters is associated with a particular power. The original idea was that you'd write down which items had which strings, and after using them you could identify what they'd done. If you then found another item elsewhere with that same string, you could refer to your sheet of paper and determine what it did. For instance, +1 vitality and -1 age is present on a bunch of different items. In the modern era, it's probably easier to just download the Cosmic Forge game editor and look there.
