How can I improve my fighter so that hit actually connects when he swings because I miss a lot. Im putting tons of points into "Sword" but still miss during the fights.
what I would do is put points into close combat, sword, and dexterity and strength. Dexterity will make you hit more often and strength to keep up the damage. That's what I did with my lord and he is awesome.
You need more points in dexterity and perhaps close combat. The sword skill just gives you more attack power and more swings per turn on higher levels, but Dexterity is crucial for your to hit rating.
Your Attack Rating in the item screen is what determines how likely you are to hit. Better weapons and higher weapon skill will increase it, as will Dexterity and Close Combat. Tinker around with your equipment to see how it changes.

Not dual-wielding will also increase it. You need to get Dual Weapons up to 50 or more to not be terrible at it, but the only way to increase it quickly is to do it, so you just sort of have to suffer for a while. If you have a lot of dual-wielding characters, I recommend putting them on a rotation so that you have at least one fully effective melee character at a time.

Thanks for ALL the replies. I'll keep that in mind, I have been putting more points into Senses and Intelligence thinking that would do it. I'll start putting points into Dexterity. Thanks again.
Don’t overlook his weight... loading your party with junk will make them encumbered as showed by the inventory screen (blue or green).
Also, don't forget Intelligence, as it is a modifier of the Close combat Skill. It doesn't need to go up very high, but having Intelligence below 35 will make both the character miss quite a lot and slow down his progression in the close combat skill (and ranged combat, actually almost all skills in the upper left tab are affected by intelligence), which further aggravates the Issue
