I have read thru a few forums and have tried everything that was posted in the forums. I have tried reloading the game I have tried right clicking the icon then clicking on compatibility and tried running it with every different version of windows they had listed. I loaded direct x june 2010 patch. I really need some help. thanks.
1. What type of Windows, i.e Vista?
2. Where did you install the game?
3. What system/ chip i.e. AMD or Intel?

Did you do a clean install i.e. started your windows in safe mode to stop Chrome from buggering it up and told your Nortains anivirrus to piss off?

Why did you install a direct x patch... did the game start but then your display crashed?
I have an alienware laptop
running widows 7 pro 64 bit
intel chipset and cpu
I download the game from gog.com

I did not have chrome loaded on my machine at the time of downloading. I am using window essentials for anti-virus
I download the direct x patch because it was listed in another forum to help make the game launch

Thanks, that narrows it down a bit;

1. Did the game install?
Since you downloaded it from Gog recently then the installer should have defaulted to something like C:GOG games\ BG2… but anything outside the programs folder should install correctly.

If not then I'd confirm admin rights (turn off any parenting control software) on your account and try a safe mode install.

2. The game (appears to) install correctly but when you click on the start icon nothing happens {or more likely the mouse seems to be waiting for you to do something}.

This is most commonly caused by some kind of system check… I'd reset your antivirus settings to lowest for a test (while off the internet of course) or better yet uninstall " window essentials" and replace it with something decent like AVG or Avast which both have continuing support.

3. The game installs and runs until X screen comes on but then crashes to desktop or locks up?

This is a software compatibility issue 9 out of 10 times… direct x could be causing it but I'd suspect your Intel chip drivers first because they could be manufacture drivers i.e. alienware instead of the basic Intel ones which actually get updated sometimes. The bottom line is once you get to this point then the Gog help desk is your best option as they can analyse the dxdiag report you send them.

Good luck with it m8.
WRT #3: In addition to updating the video drivers, you might also want to try running the 3D graphics configuration utility in the game folder and set it to use DirectX rather than Glide. I don't know if this will make a difference, but it's possible that the Intel chipset doesn't like the Glide wrapper for some reason.
I had the same issue. This fixed it for me.
