Try compatibility modes for Windows 95, 98 and XP (right-click the game's shortcut => Properties =>Compatibility tab)

Update your graphics drivers.

If it doesn't work, make sure your system has everything needed to run the game:
- Install AC3Filter for audio decoding
- Install DirectX 9 redistributable
- Install an MPEG2 video decoder (e.g. this one http://www.si-gamer.net/gulikoza/bin/mpeg2dec.zip; extract to your WC5 directory and run register.bat)

If it still crashes, try running the game as Administrator by right-clicking the game's shortcut and select "Run as Admininstrator"

Alternatively you could give the OpenGL Patch a chance, maybe it's more compatible with your graphics setup.

thanks, it's working now
I followed the instructions here but found that it still wouldn't run. In fact, the MPEG2 installer had some kind of failure at the end.

To get the game running I went into the install folder, ran nglide_config.exe and selected Vulcan as the video backend. Now the game runs fine. I also set the screen resolution to "by desktop" but I that's really just a preference thing.

None of these options works for me.
