Here is how to get 16,711,680 at the start of the game in Wing Commander: Privateer on a Mac running OS X El Capitan. I do not know if this will work on any other game supported version of OS X but I think it shouldn't be the problem aside from maybe directory structure.

1. Start a new game and immediately Save it as something like NEW01.
2. Navigate to:

~/Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States/com.gog.wing-commander-privateer/Current.boxerstate/C.harddisk

and here you will find your NEW01.SAV file.

3. Open a HEX editor. I purchased Hex Edit Pro from the App store.

4. open the NEW01.SAV file in the editor of your choosing from previous step.
5. Look near the bottom of the file in the right column, you should see something like this: "CCRGI – d DATA DAMG NAVQ Tomek Raven"

In my game "Tomek" is my pilot name and "Raven" is my callsign.

In that string, pay attention to what is between: CCRGI and the first lower case letter "d", like so: CCRGI – d (note spacing is not the same show on the forum as it is in the Hex editor).

6. Highlight the dash in the right column of your Hex editor and you will see that its hexadecimal equivalent is: D0 in the left pane. Change the left pane's value to the maximum hexadecimal size: FF

7. Save

8. Open the saved game in Wing Commander: Privateer and you should be rich!

I have attached a screen shot of the differences. NEW03.SAV is the original game and NEW01.SAV is my modification. You can barely see the highlight, but notice the FF on line 770 in the left window vs the D0 on line 770 in the right window.

NOTE: I've noticed game crashes when the money is set that high, so just set it to something smaller like 77 and you'll still get a lot of money just not the max.

Hope this helps!

Disclaimer:
I started playing this game, I wanted to go through the story line and have fun just like in the old days. I started the normal way, working through missions etc and suddenly the game became impossible. I found myself dying 8 times just to finish a mission... suddenly it was not fun. So I put on my hacker hat and proceeded to really have fun with bits! :)

I really just want the story line of the game.
