algi: Hello!
I have suddenly a problem. TRANSFER.EXE runs just fine, but all the beds are empty. It doesn't see my WC1 saves for some reason. I tried running it from DosBox, tried using that config file, tried copying the directory to a simpler path and running it from there. I feel like the problem might be that I cannot recreate the fake DOS path for the TRANSFER.EXE to find the save file, but I'm not sure how to solve it.
PS. Couple of years ago I transferred my pilot from WC1 to the end of WC2 no problem, and as I remember, I could just run TRANSFER.EXE from DosBox and it worked just fine.
PPS. According to Galaxy, the latest version is just 1 year old. I tried rolling back to the earlier version, but then not even the main game will see the current saves. Why is it so difficult to use a DOS EXE on a save file???
sutherlanddm: THIS!! This is exactly me right now. Empty beds. Tried GOG, tried DosBox manually, tried different Conf files so it lets you go straight to the Transfer program from the launcher - all empty beds. But if I go back to the original game, they all show up just fine. Please help!
I hope it's not too late, GOG helpdesk helped me solve this. So, the thing is that the new version puts the save files in a different subdirectory. What I did was: I made a backup of them, the rolled back to the earlier version and copied back in where they're supposed to be, so TRANSFER.EXE can find it.
So, this is how it worked:
1. Make a backup of the "C:\GOG Games\Wing Commander\cloud_saves/GAMEDAT" directory.
2. Roll back the game to the earlier version in GOG Galaxy. (I turned off cloud saves to be sure, I don't know if that's needed.) See attached picture.
3. Overwrite the C":\GOG Games\Wing Commander\GAMEDAT" directory with the backup you made.
4. Now you can run TRANSFER.EXE from DosBox and it will see the save games.
Also, don't forget to run WCSAV after the transfer. Don't change anything if you don't want to cheat, but just running and exiting will fix an overflow problem that would kill off your companions if you didn't run it. (You have to run once for each Secret Missions 1 and 2 both.)
