I played Wing Commander 3 when it was on 4 discs on the playstation 1, love it and finished it several times.

I'm tempted to buy it but I have no flight stick or joystick for my pc.
are the mouse controls ok?
I've tried the mouse flight mode, and it works OK. Your mouse should behave normally. However, the devs have implemented it quite strangely: you don't directly move the "nose" of your fighter, but another cursor in a small, invisible small box. In other words, you "drag" your fighter in one direction. It still gives you an impression of weight and inertia, which is a good thing, but you'll need some time to get used to forget looking at the cursor to focus on the fighter's sight. Other than that, some controls will be automatically mapped to your mouse (afterburner). After a few minutes I found this flight mode playable (odd at first but precise and eventually quite convenient, flight sensations apart) - so if you don't want to invest in a joystick or pad, you should still enjoy the game.

Although I've had lots of practice, I find I'm pretty accurate with mouse control (withe the exception of Privateer which lacks the cursor for some wierd reason).

I find it superior to controling "the nose" of the ship as the previous poster mentioned because most of the time that translates to FPS style turning where if I need to keep turning to track a fighter I have to constantly keep moving my mouse over. You run out of desk really really fast that way. So I actually like the way it works in Wing Commander. But it does take practice to get accurate For sure. it mainly means getting a feel for where center is.
