Yes, any usb joystick should do.
You might want to use these Dosbox .conf settings.

[joystick]
joysticktype=auto
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=true
buttonwrap=false

Also check if your joystick is the 1st device in the gamecontroller settings, or just disconnect all other controllers to be sure.

I am using a X65F and I didn't have to edit anything. So just give it a try. And it's not whether Privateer supports your joystick but if dosbox does....it should.

Joystick support in the first Privateer is very limited (two buttons and two axes) so you'll want to use the DOSBox Mapper to assign keyboard commands to your extra buttons. Unfortunately there's no way to get the hardware throttle working with this game since it's so limited.

Freespace 2 has full support for modern joysticks, including throttle axes, so you can bind everything the way you want it without extra fiddling.
that seems like bull, the original game (pre voice patch even) on original hardware worked with a throttle fine, there has to be a way to get it working.

The manual and quick reference card say nothing about supporting a hardware throttle (instead only showing the operation for a two-button stick). I didn't have this game back in the day so I don't know much more than that. Some games might check the joystick model in a way that DOSBox doesn't support (it isn't a perfect replica of real DOS-era hardware).

Hi,
I used to play this with a Logitech 3D Pro with no problem. After I upgraded my joystick to the current Saitek X-55 HOTAS , whenever I launch into space and activate my gun, they will automatically fire unless I turn them all off. Is there any way we can solve this issue? Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions!
