I generally prefer to play space sims with the mouse since there are so many keyboard controls I need to use at the same time, but the mouse control in Wing Commander 4 is simply unplayable. It has a little reticle you move around(which the weapons don't follow, they aim straight at the centre of the screen) and once it gets a certain distance away from the centre, suddenly the ship starts to turn. There's absolutely no transition between staying still and suddenly turning at quite a fast speed. Couple that with the fact that sometimes it doesn't turn quite in the direction you want(for example trying to turn left will also go up at a 45 degree angle), or that after a small movement you'll quickly bounce back in the exact same direction as you just came from, and you've got some pretty horrid response.
So, I decided to switch to my gamepad, which isn't preferable since I need to be able to press keyboard keys frequently, and I found that it to turns way too fast, as well as being really jerky. There's just so little smoothness, especially when you try to tilt up/down slightly at the same time as turning sideways. And again that issue with jumping back in the opposite direction after a small turn is present, though it doesn't seem to be quite as common. I also can't use the joystick calibration in the game since clicking the button just flashes black for a tiny moment and does nothing else.
I've been enjoying Privateer quite a lot and managed to cope with the high turning speed with my gamepad, but this game is damn near impossible for me to play properly.
I've tried searching all over the place and haven't found anyone else even so much as mention these issues, despite it seeming to be present in gameplay videos(besides the mouse stuff, which apparently no one uses for obvious reasons).
Guess I'll just be sticking to Privateer and Freespace 2. I don't even see how this would be possible with a proper joystick thanks to the almost total lack of any smoothness.
