I read this on the DosBox website:

core=auto
cputype=auto
cycles=auto 70%.

Don't know why, but it works best for me!

Hatman: The main problem is this:

cycles=max

GOG tends to use max setting for cycles in most if not all of their dosbox releases. Every single dosbox game i bought on GOG has issues with choppy audio "out of the box". The solution is to find a cycles setting that works good for your system. It differs for everyone, wich is why GOG can't set it "right". You have to do it yourself. For WC3 setting cycles to anything between 50.000 - 100.000 got rid of choppy sound and ensured good framerate even inside carrier ships. The setting for this would be:

cycles=fixed 100000

EDIT: For this to help you should only change the cycles. Leave the core setting on auto/dynamic, etc.
Great! This worked for me! Thanks Hatman.
Same problem, different solution.

core=normal
cputype=auto
cycles=auto
cycleup=1000
cycledown=1000

Needed to get this solved before wanting to play, all video and gameplay run smooth with these settings for me.
Just want to say thanks for this. Changing the cycles to 75000 took care of the issue for me.
The easiest way I’ve found to fix this is to start the game. Press Alt-Enter to bring up the windowed mode. At the top of the window you’ll see by default that your “CPU cycle” is at 100%. This is too high for this old game. Press Ctrl+F11 to reduce the cycle. Mine works best at 30%-35%. After you find the correct percentage and the stuttering stops, just press Alt+ Enter again. Enjoy.

mozzington: Could somebody talk me through exactly how to do the "fixed 100000 " cure please. I am a dosbox novice.

Vagabond: Open the "dosboxwc3.conf" file in the WC3 folder with Notepad and search for the "cycles=" line, and replace the value with "fixed 100000". (No quotations)
Thank you, that fixed it for me!

You're welcome. Ten years on and they still haven't fixed this!
