What is the best way to play the game?
Joystick, keyboard, or mouse+keyboard?
I'm an old PC gamer and not used to joysticks.
If a joystick is recommende does anyone know if the Locgitech 3 Attack - http://www.logitech.com/gaming/joysticks/devices/302 - works with the game.?
Or these two?

Are there any remakes or graphics updates for WC1?
Any mods?

I highly recommend using a Joystick (for flying and shooting) and keyboard (for in-flight options that require it). The keyboard is required for several functions, and the joystick is important for both easy control and enhancing the feeling of play.

Don't worry about using a joystick; I had never seriously played a game with one before Wing Commander and I got used to it very quickly. I highly recommend the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. That's what I use, and it's easy to play with (if you're right-handed), it works with DosBox, and it's easy to configure.

As for fan-projects and mods, I highly recommend this website for all of your Wing Commander needs: Wing Commander CIC

They've got pretty much everything you'd ever need, from daily news to links to fan-projects, including whole fan-games!

No problem. Enjoy the game! : )
I use that Attack 3 and have used it for WC1. It works fine for moving and firing, but some of the advanced controls that were available years back for joysticks in the game seem not to work.

I'm going to try out xpadder though. Apparently it allows you to map keyboard controls to a joystick, so I'm thinking I can probably remap all the necessary commands.
