Hi, all. I just joined today after finding out GoG is selling the Wing Commander games. When I downloaded Tyrian and discovered that it used DOSbox, I thought I'd take a tilt at downloading DOSbox and running my old Privateer CD-ROM under XP myself.

The problem is that I want to get my Xbox 360 controller working in lieu of a flight joystick. The DOSbox console seems to detect it fine; the only problem is, when the game gets to the opening menu, the cursor immediately rushes to the bottom right corner of the screen and stays there. This means I can't calibrate the joystick.

I've tried going into the config file and changing the timed value under [joystick] to "false," but then the game locks up at the opening cinematic (the music keeps playing but all I see is the curve of the planet; no text, no animation).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I just recently downloaded the game and after much effort I've gotten the windowed mode to a resolution of 1600x900 and my xbox 360 controller works just fine. the cursor acts and behaves normally. Unfortunately i find the game difficult to play with the controller. As i don't know what buttons are what and I'm not sure how i can check it exactly. Joy stick calibration doesn't allow me to select buttons just the stuff about the joy stick. So my advice to your problem is to uninstall the game and re install it. As whatever was the issue no longer is.

Edit: Actually i found this also. I found your post by goggle searching Privateer and Xbox 360 controller. http://www.wcnews.com/chatzone/threads/dosbox-0-70-privateer-1-joya-dat-for-joystick.20146/

To use the Xbox 360 controller with the GOG version of Wing Commander: Privateer, follow these steps...
*Navigate to Privateer's program folder, usually C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Wing Commander Privateer
*Delete any joya.dat file
*Open dosboxPRIV.conf with Notepad
*Find the line that looks like this: joysticktype=auto
*Edit the line so that it looks like this: joysticktype=4axis
*Save edited file as dosboxPRIV.conf

Now, run the game using the desktop shortcut. Calibrate joystick (using left analog stick) as directed by the game. This SHOULD work. It did the trick for me. Now, if you really want to set it up good, download XPadder. Assign functions to X, Y, BACK, START, D-Pad, LTrigger, RTrigger, and even the right analog stick. Just leave the left analog stick, A, B, and the R & L shoulder buttons blank in XPadder-they're already assigned by Privateer. Not sure really why RB & LB are assigned, but they seem to be.

Good luck!

Ty for this information, However since then i've given up, lol. The game really does look good though. Despite my old age making me somewhat of a graphics wh0re I really liked what time i did spend with Wing Commander Pirvateer, and I wish they would remake it.
