I just talked to a friend of mine who has problems with her GOG version of Privateer (and no internet connection at the moment, so I promised to post her question here): is there a way to change the music of the game to Sound Blaster? She says her GOG version only emulates MIDI.

She already edited the .conf file so that it says
mpu401=none
device=none

But when she starts the game with those options, the game doesn't start at all. DOSBox only shows a black screen.

She also started DOSBox itself and launched the setup of the game (install.exe) so that it uses Sound Blaster for both sound AND music.

But DOSBox still shows a black screen when started.

And when she changes the .conf file back to how it was, the game uses emulated MIDI music again...

Changing the .conf isn't necessary for Sound Blaster music. Did she actually save the changes by choosing "install with these options"?

Basically, the following will work:
1. Run INSTALL.EXE with DOSBox (dragging it onto DOSBox.exe is one easy method).
2. Change the settings appropriately, simply hitting enter for all the prompts.
3. Choose "install with these options" to save the changes, press any key to quit the installer, then close DOSBox.
4. The game will now use the new music/sound settings.

Thank you! She says it works perfectly. Don't know what she did before in that setup menu of the install.exe but I bet she only "returned to DOS" instead of "installing with these options"...
