When starting Privateer, the music for the intro cinematic and inside the base plays just as it should. And the space music plays normally for the few seconds during the brief ship launch cinematic, but then as soon as the cockpit view appears the music drops to about half speed.

You can see the problem in this tweak guide video (not by me): https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=d2KM6-IpcjI#t=281. The person playing in that video doesn't seem to notice the problem, but you can definitely hear it.

I've tried increasing and decreasing the CPU cycles, adjusting the sound sample rate, and changing the graphics renderer. Nothing is working. The slowdown is there regardless of whether I use Sound Blaster or MIDI as a music source. Surely I can't be the only person on this forum who's encountered this problem?

Somebody bought the whole WC series on sale, eh? ;-)

I've never experienced this problem myself (probably because I used the remake Privateer Gemini Gold for my last playthrough), but it was funny to see (hear) the issue in your video. So I got curious and have searched a bit. It could be that this is a bug in Privateer, that is somehow connected to input control. Apparently it happens when there's no joystick plugged in.

Try adding a virtual one in DOSBox.

Open the game's .conf file and set
joysticktype=2axis
timed=false

(The .conf file is only used when you start the game with the shortcuts provided during installation)

Welcome back to my little quest to get this series working properly. I actually purchased all of these a while ago on GOG (Christmas I think), but hadn't gotten around to actually trying them out until now.

And yeah I also should have done a more thorough search on this before posting. Someone at the DOSBox compatibility page had the same suggestion. I tried it last night and, though having to configure a non-existent joystick was a bit of a pain, it eventually did the job. Thanks.
You're welcome! No worries, just ask if you've got any questions, there's usually somebody happy to help.
Happy privateering ;-)
An alternate solution is to use the music speed fix which replaces the executable with a corrected one. The DOSBox configuration file does not need to be changed when using this method.
