serious question: what would you most want in a modern game like Privateer that's not in Privateer?

I would want a game like Privateer with updated graphics, sound, full motion video, and a decent story line, not a straight up space combat sim like Free-space 2. They did a remake but it was with the Vega engine that I did not like, but you couldn't whine because it was free. I am hearing that Ever space 2 may be one! I hope.

I was bout to to suggest that. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is basically privateer 1.5. You will fell right at home. If anything it is too familiar IMO.

Since WCP is an Elite clone in the WC universe I'd say Elite: Dangerous if you don't mind the grind.

But yeah, I agree with Rebel Galaxy: Outlaw, it's the closest thing in feel to the original WCP ever made though a bit shallow on content and a dissappointing story.

I like to recommend this one:

Archimedean Dynasty, or Schleichfahrt, as it is known in Germany, is a truely amazing combat sim and one of the best of its kind. It is amongst the very best games I've ever played and one of my all time favourites.

How it's possible, that a pasterpiece like this, is almost unknown internationally, is beyond me.
In Europe, it was successfull enough to spawn 2 sequals and a, quite recent, prequal - the Aquanox series.
The Aquanox games however, were closer to ego shooters, with only slight simulation elements.
But whether you like the Aquanox games or not, the original, Archimedean Dynasty, is a classical masterpiece and deserves all the praise it got. And surely it deserves to be played, by anyone who enjoys the genre.

Okay... this is in no way a modern, nor a current game. But I just couldn't let a chance to recommend this unknown gem pass...

Yeah, AD is great, one of the best and most interesting gameworlds to be around in.

Now there's a hot take, but I actually do agree. The storyline is meh, but the space RPG mechanics are perfect. The most important fact is that you can pilot medium sized ships just as you would in Privateer. You've also got plenty of out of cockpit interactions. Wanna play a trader? You can do that. Wanna haul cargo? Yep. Wanna be a space pirate. You can do that too. Joinable factions are also featured.

Starfield is hot garbage. Save your money.
