Hi,

I'm looking for a good joystick (price not very important) to play basically space sims (especially old ones like wing commander series, freelancer 2, x-wing games etc). I was thinking of getting Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X but I'm open to suggestions. My main concern is compatibility with these old space sims. I appreciate any help.

I've only owned one joystick (the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro) so I can't really help with regards to brands and so forth.

Compatibility isn't part of the buying decision; it doesn't depend on the particular joystick you have but rather on how controller support was implemented in the game. Some older games are only able to see a certain number of buttons and axes (mostly DOS games) or impose other limitations (e.g. bindings you can't change). There are always workarounds for this like the DOSBox Mapper, so with enough tinkering you can get a game set up the way you want it.

The newer Windows games like Freespace and Darkstar One don't have such limitations and the same goes for old games with modern source ports like Descent and Descent II.

Thanks for your reply. So whatever I will get will work.

could anyone compare these two?

or any other suggestions?
Be careful with getting a HOTAS setup for space sims. I've never owned an X52, but if windows treats the throttle and stick as separate devices, as it does with my Warthog HOTAS + pedals, then you'll only be able to use one of those devices with older space sims, like Wing Commander or Freespace. Likewise, although I cannot attest to the build quality of the X52, the Warthog HOTAS is completely inappropriate for a space sim. In an actual flight sim, whether civil or combat, overcontrolling invariably leads to high-G turns, rapid airspeed loss, excessive angles of attack, stalls, spins etc. whereas in a space sim, you use the full control range of the stick all the time. Likewise, you tend not to spend too much time squeezing the trigger in a real flight sim -- you have very little ammunition and you need to make it count -- where as space sims, with recharging lasers and enemies that take multiple direct hits, require that you be squeezing the trigger constantly. I bring these issues up, because as a result of them, the Warthog HOTAS has true to life stick deflection resistance, and requires a true to life amount of force to depress a button or trigger. In other words, if you're constantly fully deflecting the stick one way and then another, and constantly squeezing that two-stage trigger, you're hand and wrist are going to get tired very fast. Likewise, using the Hog Hotas in a space-sim would likely put unnecessary wear on what is a rather expensive setup. The X52 may be much more toy-like in its build quality, and thus appropriate for a space sim, but it may not. Your best bet for a stick for WC and Freespace would be either the Saitek AV8R, which recently stopped being manufactured but is still readily available, or the Logitech Extreme 3D.

thanks, this was really helpful. I've ordered http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Playstation-3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1361545008&sr=8-2&keywords=joystick based on some user reviews on amazon that they were playing old space sims just fine. However, reading your post, I truly hope that T-Flight HOTAS is considerably different as compared to Warthog HOTAS.
What you ordered should be perfect. It appears to be one device, so you won't have to worry about the game only seeing the stick, or only seeing the throttle. Likewise, at that price range, there's not going true to life deflection resistance, etc. so you won't tire your hand out. Finally, the stick is cheap enough that if you wear it out in a few years of playing space sims, it won't be prohibitively expensive to buy a new one.

If you're curious, this is the warthog hotas: http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-Hotas-Warthog-Joystick-2960720/dp/B00371R8P4/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1361646732&sr=1-1&keywords=warthog+hotas

Full metal construction, 1:1 replica of the HOTAS in the A-10C Warthog. It's specifically meant for one game in particular: DCS A-10C, which is probably the most sophisticated and realistic combat flight sim ever made. Check it out:

The HOTAS-X works fine for Wing Commander with a few tweaks - see my thread on how I got it working. I've played through WC1 and Secret Missions 1 + 2 with no problems.

(Note: A tech-savvy friend informs me that the issue I noted with registering multiple keypresses simultaneously is apparently an issue with older USB technology, not something specific to the HOTAS stick.)
I recommend the CH Combatstick 568. Smooth, precise, and strong build quality.
