I just picked up Wing Commander 1-2 and am looking for a good usb gamepad or joystick to play it with. What would people reccomend? And how does the games recognize and respond to them?

I bought the Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y. 5 (http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/fly5.html) a week ago to play WC4. I must say that I remember joysticks to be a bit more smooth. I used to play with a Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Q9JJVRXVL.jpg). But my memory must be failing me :P
I bought Wing Commander 3&4 yesterday, used to love these games back in the PS1 days, unfortunatly i had forgotten that you need to use a joystick/gamepad when doing space combat. I've looked for a cheap but still decent gamepad that might work, but i've read some of the other threads that people are having trouble with their gamepads, is there anyway to be sure the gamepad i wanna buy will work with the games?

I was thinking about purchasing this one:

Logitech Rumble gamepad F510

Just received my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro today, installed the software that came with it, hooked it up via USB and started Wing Commander 1.

It works like a charm. Remember though that back then (1990 geez!) joysticks weren't like today and most of them had only two buttons. Therefore, it is designed with that in mind and only the Trigger (button 1) and the thumb button (button 2) on the joystick works. I guess that if you tweak the controls inside dropbox you could assign keyboard keys to certain buttons on the joystick/gamepad.

You can get one of those for less than 40$ online. Got mine on sale on Amazon.ca for 37$ tax included!

Have fun! :)

Logitech sticks are usually a good bet just because they come bundled with button-mapping software. So while just plugging in the stick will get you only the original game's two-button setup, you can assign pretty much any keyboard combo to any button you want in addition to the regular joystick button setup. Dosbox has some button mapping built in to but it's way easier to configure the stick using logitech's profiler program.
I just installed WC4 and Extreme 3D Pro. The game didn't even see the joystick, no matter what settings I selected in the game. Is there some trick I'm missing?
