When I open Wing Commander IV, I instantly get a pop-under error message of a generic Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error. There are no specific details in the error message.

I have tried all the steps in nz17's guide for running WC4. I have tried changing the compatibility settings. I don't know what else to try.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

Have you tried installing Visual C++?

It gives me the error "Another version is already installed"

I can't start the game either.. The screen just goes black, then I get a windows message that the color scheme of Windows is changed back to Windows basic. When I click on that I can see the windows task bar. There's a WC4 program icon on it, a Microsoft Visual C++ program icon and a Windows icon with just a ! in a blue circle. I've installed the latest version of C++ with no results. I have WC4 installed on a Windows 7 64 bits professional laptop with an Intel HD display, which might be problematic. According to the FAQ you should try running the game with a secondary display screen attached, that didn't worl. It also mentioned running a virtual 2nd display screen, but the link to the tutorial is as dead as the Dodo.

I can't get the game to launch either on Windows 7 64 Bit. I tried using nz's fixes also but a couple of them won't run on my computer. Sad after all these years gog hasn't gotten this one fixed.

I did a ticket with gog.com and so far none of the stuff they have suggested has helped.

I did eventualyl find this 2015 thread where a guy got it working...I tried downloading the patch linked there and put it in my folder overritting a few files. Then I ran the modified exe and the game ran and started first mission without a problem. I have sent gog the info on my ticket as well as the explanation for it so maybe they'll actually patch and fix the problem themselves...but I kinda doubt it.

In the meantime check out that thread and see if it fixes it for you. I wasn't able to figured out the integrated graphics part the guy did on NIVIDIA but as I said mine is working minus gog galaxy not counting hours played on it and such. Also if I launch it from galaxy the game still crashes as before.

I wonder how many years after someone else finds a fix it takes gog to implement a fix as well :-/.

You need to set the game with Win95 compatibility, if not use HCI's Patch
