Hi,

When I use my joystick in Wing Commander 1 it has a pull to the bottom left. Does anyone know if/how I can calibrate it?

Thanks
Try editing the dosboxWC.conf in the WC directory.
You will find this passage:

[joystick]
# joysticktype: Type of joystick to emulate: auto (default), none,
# 2axis (supports two joysticks),
# 4axis (supports one joystick, first joystick used),
# 4axis_2 (supports one joystick, second joystick used),
# fcs (Thrustmaster), ch (CH Flightstick).
# none disables joystick emulation.
# auto chooses emulation depending on real joystick(s).
# (Remember to reset dosbox's mapperfile if you saved it earlier)
# Possible values: auto, 2axis, 4axis, 4axis_2, fcs, ch, none.
# timed: enable timed intervals for axis. Experiment with this option, if your joystick drifts (away).
# autofire: continuously fires as long as you keep the button pressed.
# swap34: swap the 3rd and the 4th axis. can be useful for certain joysticks.
# buttonwrap: enable button wrapping at the number of emulated buttons.

joysticktype=auto
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false

Try setting timed=false to timed=true.

Hope this will help :)
Why don't you calibrate it by using the in game calibration method?

Ctrl + J in the Main Menu.
Uh there is no main menu in WC1. WC1 and 2 are among the few games that do their joystick calibration on the fly in game. There is nothing the user can do. To be honest it always worked for me. It's possible something is wrong with you joystick. I've owned many over the years and few remain properly centered.

That's not correct. When you launch WC1, there is a menu with 3 options after the intro ("Start Vega Campaign", "Continue Campaign", "Start Secret Missions"). If you press CTRL+J in this menu you are able to calibrate the joystick.

The same works in the similar menu in WC2.

Here's a screengrab.

neat, learn something new evrey day. I wonder what about SM2 which doesn't have a menu.

But it's never needed. WC1+2 does calibrate on the fly, unless your joystick is incapable of being centered.

neosapian: this is an old post but I am trying to edit this conf the layout is a mess within note pad which does not organize the text not in order the in the conf. text is all haphazard, how do you get the lines in order so I can tell what I am changing?
The DOSBox config file becomes this "mess" when you run the graphics utility. Sloppy coding I guess :)

Best never to run it and only manually edit the config file.

And that shabby reference card doesn't even give a hint on this essential funktion.
Thanks dude, you saved my life! ;-)

For me CTRL+J only works during the Intro of WC1, still the hint was good!
This may be beyond the capabilities of the game, but is there a 3rd party software or utility that I can use to map my joystick buttons (and add the throttle utility)?

I have a Logitech Wingman Extreme 3D pro.

Found the config file... I was looking in the wrong directory.

How many buttons can I map (if any)? I can only seem to get the fire button and X-Y control to work. :(

Thanks.

It was the recommendation duckduckgo came with, sorry.
You still need Logitech Profiler to assign buttons.
