I finished the game. It is short...really short. I had about about 10 hours into it. The story was good, but the areas the player has to explore are quite limited. There are some things that should be updated for balancing and quality of life that the devs should take note of. Here is some constructive critisism for devs and players alike.
Like I said, the game is short. There is little to explore. Expanding the playing area for each chapter and the size of some of the islands would give the player more to do in each location rather than skipping from one island to the next to pick up the limited resources available on each island.
The length of the day/night cycle is too short. It takes nearly a whole day/night cycle to explore a single island the size of a couple acres. At night, all the creatures are sleeping. Adding in some nocturnal creatures would spice up some areas of the game.
The rate at which food degrades is unreasonable. I like the idea of the rotting machanic. The food should spoil after a day or two. The short day/night cycle makes this unreasonably short.
Why can't I craft metal tools?! I can craft a metal spear, arrows, helm, and armor...what about a hammer? Axe? Shovel?
The ragdoll physics are wonky. Fall from a great height and the character flops, rolls around, stumbles...same after being struck by a large creature. This leaves the character open to second attacks and there is nothing you can do about it. Creatures too flop, roll, and fold up in weird contortionist ways after dying. It just looks...weird.
Give the player the option to rebind keys! I prefer playing with WASD, but some people prefer a different layout.
The game crashed on me several times in my playthrough. Infinite loading screens, unity crashes that cause the game to stop responding, occasional crashes on exit, and occasional crashes between chapters. I had to replay the final journey at the end because the game crashed after the cinematic with the nautalis.
Resources should replenish after a few days time. Things like bamboo, tall grass, wood, etc. Once they have been collceted in a chapter, they are gone for good.
Sea shards are nearly worthless. They are too abundant, and there is too little to spend them on. At the end of the game, I had over 6000 shards...
The kamakazi crabs! AAHHH! Why?! Why must these crabs come flying out of the water, and only in areas with shallow water where there are plenty of obstacle to run into. They will destroy your ship so fast before you have an opportunity to drop and relax your sails...or not dropping them and risk running into obstacles while taking care of them. Do away with the flying crabs. Maybe give the player a means of fishing for them instead.
Now, it's not all negative here. I did enjoy the game a lot, but I think with a few updates it could be so much more enjoyable and immersive. None of that stuff was neccessarily game breaking. I was able to play through start to finish. It just needs some polish and quality of life improvements. I'd really like to see the game improved to make it a MORE enjoyable experience.
