I have a Logitech controller, because this game is next to impossible without one. I have been messing with it for hours with no luck. do i just need to bite the bullet and buy an Xbox controller or is there a workaround?

Go here for the controller emulator.

When installed, this will emulate the Xbox 360 controller inputs so you do not have to spend 50 bucks on a Micro$oft controller for the PC. I use with an older Logitech controller and it works great.
