gaspop: I read the list of features for this special edition. I'm interested in how you plan to implement both grid-based and free first person movement. Won't that mean having to redesign most of the levels? Walking around freely in a maze-like enviroment that was designed for a grid sounds quite odd, for example.
I think the idea of making it easier for the player to heal up is good, since the original game could be unforgiving in that department. I'm not sure I like the idea of increasing the weapon efficiency though. Take the mine for example, the only useful weapon was the spray gun. Knowing that the melee weapons were useless against the plant monsters and that you could run out of fuel for the spray gun at any time increased the tension immensely. Would hate for that to disappear.
I'm sure you've thought this through though, I can't wait to see more footage from this new version.
We are going to change the gameplay quite a lot. If you grab any tool i.e. shovel, axe pick, bar etc you will be able to use it as weapon. The effect will be huge...not like in original game. This SE version will be more realistic and you should be able to kill the creature with shovel as good as another tool. Of course, it depends what kind of mutant is standing in front of you.
The energy sources will be from food, water, bandages and maybe some potion. You dont need skill points anymore.
We have grid-based camera and FPS camera already set up, but we haven't made final decision yet. We might stuck with FPS for now. If we implement it to the game, its gonna be optional.
