Hello!
I'm playing W2 DC and having a lot of fun, but I got confused by the Watchman perk (from sniper rifles) the other day. You can get it on level 3 and it says "No Chance to Hit penalty when using Ambush". So I assumed that as soon as the enemy in the shooting range and moving, my character will have 100% hit chance so I started using that as much as possible. It seems that it is true - I had no misses so far, but I had one particular incident when some raider moved and activated my character's ambush, my char shot and killed (plot twist) the cow that was between them. Is this something that can occur or is it a bug of some sort?

Actually, I don't think it guarantees a 100% chance to hit, but let's say there's usually a -10% penalty for using ambush that disappears when you have watchman. Don't know what the actual penalty is.

I don't think the chance to hit percentage takes other targets into consideraton, so beware of putting your other characters in the line of fire.

An interesting question: Is there ever a situation in which you are more likely to hit a target if you target an enemy behind the one you really want to hit?

(I'm playing Wizardry 8 right now and noticed that it has a similar mechanic where you can hit something else in the line of fire, though spells ignore that rule.)

This is interesting, because I haven't found anything about the existance of such penalty (apart from one short post on another forum claiming that its 15%) and why would it exist? There's a close range penalty when using sniper rifles - the only one I can think of. Does it sit in the "chance to hit penalty" category? Anyway it gets more confusing the more I think about it.

Well, I'm just assuming that there would normally be some sort of chance-to-hit penalty when using ambush. I haven't found any specific numbers in the game, but if there was no penalty, then the watchman perk would be useless. It seemed to me that my snipers started doing better after getting that perk, but I guess it could just as well have to do with leveling up or getting better gear.

I noticed my shotgun user with relatively low hit chance missing all the time in ambush. Partly this may be because he shoots at longest range. But the main reason is probably such a penalty.

The reason behind the penalty is that the enemy is moving when you ambush him. In every RPG I know this gives a penalty. So, not surprising at all.

That doesn`t mean your sniper will have 100% to hit, it just means he has no penalty on his to-hit chance.

So he can still miss and hit something else, he just has less of a chance of doing it.

The ambush miss chance is normally 15%, I think.

Snipers also get a `too close` penalty so I assume this will stack. But if an enemy is THAT close you shouldn`t be using ambush with a sniper rifle. Once your sniper gets good enough you can get rid of most of this `too-close` penalty. My sniper pretty much hits anything point blank with usually a 75%-80% hit chance.

Thank you for your replies! But where do you get this data about it being 15%? I'm just worried that I may miss and overlook some other things and make bad decisions because of that.

I`m sure \i saw it somewhere in game, but now I can`t find it.

Anyway, don`t let it obsess you. Know that ambush drops your accuracy as it`s really an OPPORTUNITY shot, think of it that way. Just use accurate weapons with a high skill when putting someone on ambush. Don`t push snipers on ambush or guys with heavy weapons that spray.
