At each station I needed to use the keyboard to enter the desired action. Trying the mouse would not work
at all/ I could not place the items using the space bar, it only worked using the mouse. It took me quite a while before I finally hit on the right combinations. I sure was glad the mouse freezing bug was fixed.

Odd, I just finished assembling Max last night, and never needed the mouse at all. Oh well, it's amazing that such a vintage game even plays at all on modern hardware...
