Since there's a major upgrade for Wasteland 2 coming up in a few months, I was thinking of going through the first game to familiarize myself a bit more with the universe, but before, I had a few questions.

- Is the default party servicable? Or should I create my own characters? If so, how should I create them?
- Is there any good guides? I couldn't find an FAQ that wasn't convoluted and confusing.
- The reference card doesn't seem to show the controls. Can I find them somewhere (since this is a keyboard only game)?

- I know this is a game that doesn't hold your hand, but while playing the games, are there things I should take notes of even when playing with a guide? Just in case?
- I heard that this game is notoriously hard. I think that means I should do some level grinding at the beginning, but at the same time, ammo is very limited. Should I level-grind at the beginning? Anf if so, is there a good place and a good way to do so?

Thanks in advance. I'll probably have other questions afterwards.

- The default party is balanced, are useful to see certian aspect and straight configuration, though half of the funny is to make your own characters.
- There is a official guide that come with the Wasteland 1
- The controls, I think the manual is very useful ( I read it before playing it and remember having a good idea to what to do).

You can do level grinded, yes, but the main problem is the health not the ammo (is limmited, but not very restricted, you can enjoy the madness in the battlefield). Note: the health is only in the beginning, after some missions if you hit and run to base, will be solved.

Edit: Erh, sorry, though was Wasteland 2, not the first one, anyway are similar but probably the guide will be mandatory as you will be stuck many times by the "old style"

Be careful with the saves, you only has one and will be updated each time you enter/leave an town, this mean, that if you party is dying and you need to travel to a far town, probably restart the game is a best idea

And maybe is worth to say it, there is a button that make pass time without moving the party, I discovered in the end of the game

I finished the game using the original party + NPCs. The original party is fairly balanced, but it's possible to spam the random stats roll and get a better party if you want. If you read guides ahead of time you could also probably allocate your skills more productively (all skills are not equal by a long shot).

That said the game is a grind fest, and by grinding enough all parties are more or less equivalent - though only the player that makes the kill or performs the skill gets xp, so if you have one slightly better character they tend to outpace everyone and become a much better character before long unless you take care to nerf them with a bad weapon so other people have a chance to catch up.

The game is not keyboard only - though I would recommend treating it that way, and the controls are pretty straight forward because it's mostly menu driven (unlike the early Ultima games, this one doesn't use every key on the keyboard). Do make macros though (ctrl+f#) - even for thinks like waiting (esc), you can heal much faster if you make a macro of pressing escape a dozen times (and holding it) than you can just holding esc; and other grinding is so repetitive you'll want macros for them too.

There is a walk through that ships with the game, but there is better guides out there. Even if you don't read the walkthrough (I tried to avoid it for the most part, but a couple places tripped me up), I would recommend reading the general sections, they'll warn you about the infamous shop bug and guide you on skills: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/wasteland.html#prep is a pretty good one.

Wasteland wiki has some useful information, like stats though how they apply is not always clear: http://wasteland.wikia.com/wiki/Wasteland

Also there was a good community here: https://forums.inxile-entertainment.com/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=5d4cda8f6fc878eb7b534b65284828bf though it's dried up a lot since wasteland 2 came out. Still a lot in the past threads though.

Sounds like I'll have to spend some time gaining experience before starting in Highpool (with melee weapons not to waste ammo). But I do have a few questions.

- I know about the guide you showed, but there's something that bugs me a bit. It looks like that some skills upgrade with usage, but I'm not sure if it applies to all skills (especially combat skills). Which makes me wonder if I should spend my skill points in upgrading my existing skills, or spend them in aquiring new ones (and upgrade my existing one through usage). I also heard that there's a glitch if a character has more than 29 skills. Is it true?
- The guide doesn't bother mentioning the default character (since, in the author's opinion, they're crap), so I'm wondering if there's something missing in their inventory that I might absolutely need (I think the closest shop is in Highpool) before starting out.
- I'm not sure what you mean by Macros. I know what a macro means, but does that mean that I heal overtime just by waiting (ESC)? I know that waiting in a certain spot help grinding your skills (the only one I know for sure is swimming). Are there certain commands I should macro in your opinion? And how?

These are the questions I have at the moment. I may have more later.
I had written a detailed reply but something went wrong on the gog forums and I couldn't post it. Since I'm not sure this will go through either I'll summarize what I had written quickly.

All skills can be upgraded with usage. Brawling is only upgraded using some melee weapons (Ax, Spear, Proton Ax, Club, Chainsaw iirc), even though it is used for all. Brawling is very important for melee so keep this in mind. The 29? skill glitch is an actual problem but not something you have to worry too much about, it's more than enough skills when distributed among a party of 4 to get you through the game.

No, nothing special about the default characters at all (except iirc they couldn't have bought the skills they have based on the int but that's not very important), the same inventory could be randomly assigned and it's not particularly good or bad. Early game is hard, after that the original character stats don't matter much, all stats have nearly infinite upgrade room (the level cap is ridiculously high, you could only possibly reach it by cheating)

Macros were built into the original game. Press ctrl + F1 through F10 to start recording, press the keys you want recorded and repeat Ctrl + f# to save the macro, then just press F# to replay it. I recommend recording wait (esc) as I mentioned above, the only way to heal in wasteland is passing time (preferably in an area without random encounters). Also record perception on current tile. Otherwise I recorded any skill check action I did so that I could repeat it over and over (the failure rate for skill checks is really high, especially hard checks that are likely to upgrade your skill). There are places on the internet that can provide good combat macros too, but you'll get a feel for it.
