Actually, is the other way, Fallout is a successor of Wasteland (Though this second part come after more than 20 years late).

You don't has time limit for the quests, your pistols are useful in all the game (you are not forced to changed to heavy or energy weapons). The power armor will not guarantee you success in all the combats.

The control in other NPC are polished (Though they still are rebel ) and you still see great in black leather (Though this time there are not dogmeat) and there are a lot of toasters to repair!

And most important, there are not wasted skills (Though in the beta the backers requested disable the ability to train a skill by use).

You can "dumb" stats but will have one impact, and being honest, even the dumbest of the NPC are useful in battle.
You will hate rabbits and energy weapons (at least in the haredest settings).

P.d. You need to see Mad Max 2 (Not the Trash max in the theater right now) to understand many things in Fallout 1 and Wasteland 2

If you mean the time restriction at the beginning of the game, you can get out from under that, and the game goes on for many in-game years. If you mean the many, ill-defined in-game years, I regularly exhaust the game's possibilities (relative to a specific playthrough) before that becomes a problem. At that point, it seems to me the problem of a time restriction would be merely philosophical, rather than practical.

It's really more a successor to Wasteland than a successor to Fallout. I bought into Wasteland 2 because Fallout 1 remains my favorite Fallout game. Its atmosphere remains unique and beautiful, even darkly hilarious. When I found out Brian Fargo was going to recover and build off an earlier game I'd never played, a spiritual predecessor to my beloved Fallout, I bought in without reservation.

I don't regret that. I got my money's worth when they restored Wasteland and upped the version number to reflect significant bug fixes. It meant I finally got to play Wasteland, and I really, really enjoy both Wasteland and its sequel.

But no, they're not the same thing.
