vulchor: Yuck. I know this is not a popular opinion, but I'm really disappointed that the team is spending so much time, money, and attention to make this game into a console port, instead of adding additional content to the game like expansion packs, or even a graphical and UI overhaul for PC players, including much needed performance optimizations. I understand the market is heavily console oriented, however I loved that InExile was focusing on the PC. I really want some company to be PC selfish and create the best possible experience for PC gaming, ignoring all else (Linux and Mac should be included of course.)
sear: We wouldn't be doing it if we didn't think it was worth it. ;)
The console versions, of course, stand to do fairly well for us (we know there's an audience out there hungry for RPGs and games with tactical combat, after XCOM a couple years ago), but it's worth pointing out that all the new features and changes all benefit the PC version too. For instance:
- All new gameplay features (Precision Strikes, Perks & Quirks, rebalanced items and combat)
- New graphics and engine updates
- Controller support and updated UI
- Massively expanded VO for key characters
This isn't a small update, but the fact is that by bringing it to as many platforms as possible we have a chance to revisit the game and fix up and improve a lot of stuff we wouldn't otherwise be able to. While consoles is one of the major reasons we're doing this (since it brings the game to an entirely new audience), we aren't compromising the game's difficulty or complexity in doing so (if anything, we are adding to it) and the PC is still in many senses the "main" version - even though the console version will be a great way to play too. And obviously, improving the PC version only benefits us too.
As a mid-sized development studio, your concerns about us pulling away people from Torment perhaps have some merit, in the sense that we have only so many people to go around. But on the other hand, that fairly team size means our team is very mobile and we can reallocate resources as needed, and like I said, given the scope of the GOTY Edition update and the number of people involved, it's not something we can't handle either.
Oh, and for those who want new screenshots, you can find some here:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts/1236879 Sear, I very much appreciate your reply and assuaging my fears. I tend to over-react sometimes whenever there may be the slightest hint (real or imagined, lol) of my favorite devs beginning to favor the console market (because it may be bigger, so there's a chance of it being more lucrative, which isn't always the case) over the PC, just because as an old gamer I have seen plenty of high potential games or new entries to my favorite series get dumbed down for the console crowd, or even developed primarily for them and we get shoddy ports for PC. I have so much respect for Brian Fargo and the whole team at In-Exile, and I'm glad that you guys treat us on the PC well and always have, even though we may be the hardest to please.
In re-opening franchises like Wasteland and Torment, and now the Bards Tale, it seems that you guys seriously enjoy the challenge of pleasing the hardest and most vocal bunch of all. You have my thanks (and my money.) I can see now, especially after the screenies, how much this update will benefit all, as long as Torment doesn't suffer for it.
