Is this basically a deathmatch-centric game? Is there a place to get mods and stuff from?

Yes, this is an MP-only game. I don't think there any mods to speak of. Warsow is actually a standalone mod off of the Quake 3 source code.

Are the servers very active?

Dunno about that. I just played a quick two games for testing purposes, and there were only three/four active servers - lots of empty ones as usual. I have no idea how many players one might expect during actual peak playing hours.
In North America, the community is kind of small at the moment, as they were waiting for some bugfixes to the 1.0 release. However, now that those have been fixed, they should be coming back pretty quickly. On average, you can expect about 30-40 regular players at peak hours. In Europe, it's around 70-100.

As for whether it's MP only, you can play against bots, and they're half decent for a new player. Also, I recommend trying out other modes, like Race, which is great for learning movement, and Clan Arena or FFA, which tend to be a little more casual.

No this game is NOT MP only.

Any1 that says so obviously didnt read the description.

Secondly yes this game does support modding and there are multiple places on the web to find them at.

Do I know where? No.
Downloading the game now. Maybe we should get some GOGers together to try this game out.

Anyone who types 'any1' instead of 'anyone' obviously doesn't read. I read the description, and it says nothing about a singleplayer campaign or ladder. The game stats box at the top says 'single-player' alongside 'multi-player', but that could be applied to any game with a practice bot mode, so I disregarded it.

^^

+ With that type of logic you might as well say Doom or Quake don't have a single-player because yes you may get a screen of txt at the beginning and end of several levels but in reality your jest playing maps with bots on them running around.

'Your jest playing'? Anyway, Doom has objectives to complete (even if they are just collecting keys to open doors to find the exit) and boss fights. Quake is even more intricate than that, with even more contrived lock-and-key mechanisms. Warsow still only has a deathmatch practice mode.
Anyway, from the devs: '[Singleplayer is] not the way it's meant to be played'

Quake 2 actually.
No it is not just multiplayer. You can set it up single player by choosing local game then selecting how many players,if they are bots or not, difficulty of the bots, how long the match is.
