So thanks to Low_K I got the editor for Warlords II Deluxe to work and I've begun working on a Dune themed scenario. It will be the first in a series, I hope. I’m already thinking about making a WW2 themed, scenario, a Middle Earth scenario, and a scenario set in London’s Whitechapel district in 1888. :)

It is set on a desert map, which means that "hills" become "desert" and are hard to traverse. Certain units that are specialized in moving through sand will have a much easier time, such as Fremen and the great Shai-Hulud, while others have to rely (i.e. heavy troopers and other infantry) on dune buggies, scouts, and carryalls to quickly move them through the desert.

I've mainly used the Dune board game map as a reference to create the scenario's map. For units and cities I've taken inspiration from David Lynch's 1984 movie, and the 1992 Dune 2 game. For everything else I've tried to stick as close to Frank Herbert's novels as I can.

Currently the scenario includes:
-60 cities - these are all uniquely named and all have full descriptions, and include sietches, strongholds, villages, smuggling bases, etc.
-8 factions - House Atreides, House Harkonnen, House Corrino, Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilax, Spacing Guild, Spice Smugglers, Fremen
-A full custom map of the northern hemisphere of Arrakis, centered around the polar sink
-Custom shields that bear the actual faction symbols (Red falcon for Atreides, golden lion for Corrino, etc.)
-A complete set of custom units:
*Penal Troop (cheap, quick to train, weak and slow)
*Light Troop (average speed, weak, quick to train, fairly cheap)
*Heavy Troop (average price, speed, and strength)
*Ghola (more expensive but quicker to train heavy troop)
*House Guard (stronger heavy troop, city bonus)
*Sardaukar (stronger heavy troop, fortification bonus)
*Sardaukar Elite (better version of Sardaukar)
*Fedaykin (faster than Sardaukar, roughly same strength when in desert tile)
*Fremen Naib (improved Feydakin)
*Reverend Sister (cancels unit bonus)
*Reverend Mother (cancels unit bonus, improved sister)
*Carryall (can fly)
*Ornithopter (can fly, tougher than carryall)
*Dune Buggy (fast, desert bonus)
*Light Tank (average speed, desert bonus, reduces enemy stack)
*Combat Tank (similar to light tank but stronger and slightly slower)
*Siege Tank (similar to combat tank but siege bonus against cities)
*Devastator Tank (slow, very powerful)
*Guild Navigator (3rd stage) (slow, very powerful when in city)
*Gom Jabbar Assassin (fast, strong, reduces hero bonus)
*Dune Militia (more expensive light troop, ally)
*Ordos Mercenary (fun reference to Dune's non-canon Ordos faction, stronger than Dune Militia)
*Mentat (stronger Assassin)
*Kwisatz Haderach (you’ll see! ;) )

-Unique leader names – each faction has eight unique leaders
-39 custom Dune themed items
-Custom Dune themed “monsters” at ruins

Some units cannot be bought and can only be trained at specific sites (cities). Such as Shai-Hulud, which can only be trained at a wormsign site. Or Fedaykin that can only be created at a Fremen sietch. And Ghola that can only be made at the Tleilaxu Axlotl tanks. Also Reverend sisters and mothers that can only be trained at a Bene Gesserit Proctor school.

There’s a lot of flavour text poured into the scenario, and as many graphics as possible have been replaced with custom ones. Only the desert tile set is still the default game one. But it fits perfectly!

I expect to have the scenario done soon. I will upload it when it is ready.

Unzip and place the "ARMY", "SHIELD", "SCENARIO", and "CITY" folders in your Warlords II Deluxe directory.

Any feedback is welcome!

I will probably work on the scenario some more at a later time. Mainly to improve some of the sprites, and to add fully unique ones for certain factions. Those will be released in a new version.

Looks good, FYI outlining the units with black or very dark brown or blue outlines will help them show up better on the map, see examples from

http://www.warlorders.com/forum?func=view&catid=10&id=3638
www.mediafire.com/file/csoaobmnbi20a8e/W...RIGINALArmy.zip/file

Updated figures in Warlords 2 Deluxe, in my opinion, do not show up as well on the map as the earlier Warlord 2 classic figures did.

If the figure has a lot of dark, just leave it alone, just the light areas on the edges tend to disappear against most map backgrounds, especially light sand or snow.

Anyway, keep up the work, looking forward to PLAYING release you just posted! I read all the DUNEs a while back and what an adventure.

BTW, Do you have any issues with typing out and retaining the scenario description in the Editor?

I saw your description and I hae a hard time getting it to work as it should.
I know there only a limited number of characters (around 170 I think ) that can be used.
I seem to notice editing the scenario long description in the editor is not working that well for me at least.
It seems to not erase out all the earlier stuff if it is reloaded (if editing a prexisting scenario,) does not take in all the characters.
If I look at it in notepad ++ indeed some earlier earlier words from past edits are still there, they do not delete out; otherwise all else in the editor is fine.
I looked into editing the scenarioinfo.dat outside the editor in like NotePad but it can crash the editor when it is reloading it
thanks

EDIT Just downloaded and looked over your DUNE mod. Looks PRETTY GOOD. As for the sprites, If I were doing them I would consider outlining the aircraft and other edges that are light, and also the capes of some of the figures since the light mid green and other colors in some terrain might disappear, otherwise it looks very neat and UNIQUE from the other scenarios that have shipped and I have seen so far.

This game can be designed for almost ANYTHING in a reasonable amount of time!!!!

Thanks for checking out the scenario, SteamGog.

Good point on the visibility on army sprites. I didn't find black outlines necessary because most of the sprites have a pretty strong contrast with the background. But the Ornithopter, and especially the Carryall do suffer from poor contrast, so I will improve on that, as well as some of the faction coloured details like capes. They definitely need some outlines.

I haven't had any issue with editing descriptions. Although I did notice that you really have to press ENTER to confirm any changes to text, otherwise they'll be gone. If I notice something off I'll let you know and edit my post.

It is true that this game can be used for pretty much any setting. It is very liberating in letting one's creativity flow. I've considered doing a WW2 scenario around D-Day (cities as beach fortifications) or the Battle of Britain (lots of flying units), a scenario around crime and Jack the Ripper in 1888's London (cities as special buildings or buildingblocks), Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones. Could create my own terrain set and do a scenario completely in space, with cities for space stations, mountains for asteroid fields, roads as hyper-lanes.

So many possibilities!
for some reason the game doesn't want to load it. I extracted everything and I can see the Dune folders in all of the correct places, but I can't load the scenario in Warlords II Deluxe. Is there a step I missed?
As far as I know it should be working.

I'll see if creating a packed DUNE.scz file through the Librarian tool will make a difference.

Did you put "ARMY", "SHIELD", "SCENARIO", and "CITY" all in the right place?

I.E. you put the DUNE folder under ARMY in the Warlords II Deluxe's ARMY folder?

You say you can't load the scenario. But does it show up in the scenario list in game?

Download the DUNE.SCZ file and place it in the Warlords II Deluxe directory. Then start "Launch Warlords II Deluxe".
Select option 2
Select "Librarian"
In the right hand window, scroll all the way down until you see the DUNE.SCZ file
Select it and unpack

You should now be able to play the scenario.

FYI I had no issues copying over the individual folders and looking at it in the editor and then running the scenario itself.

However, The .scz does make sure all the stuff is there and placed properly, so once you run the Librarian, and it extracts OK; the rest should be fine.

Ah ok, I didn't know you needed to unpack it within the game itself. I got it working now, and now I know what to do for loading custom scenarios in the future. Haven't done that in, like, 20 years so I forgot that last step.

Thanks for the instructions, and for the scenario, I'm a huge Dune fan so this tickles all the right areas for me :D

I'm glad you got it to work! Let me know what you think of the scenario and if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. :)
I tried to install it succesfully by unpacking it with the librarian option, (I was trying to install it by just unzipping the folders in the directory and didn't work that way)
Amazing map and I am huge fan of dune ..I started as Atreides and expanding at nearby sieches ..It catches all the dune theme so right ,love how the sand affects the movement of the troops around..Atreides have an advantage with the ornithopters for fast moving but Harkonen have that nasty devastator that I can't beat it up..
It's amazing how it stands as a unique Dune game and shows what the warlords engine can do ..
Thank you for sharing this (Dune is the second scenario I try as I won the Tomb of Elcor first)

Thank you. It is interesting that a game is coming out in 2022 called "Dune: Spice Wars".

Coincidence? :P

I'll see if I can remove some reference to Frank Herbert in the scenario's title. Just calling it "Dune" might help from the link being taken down.

A little sad that they feel the need to strike a DMCA against a small non-commercial scenario for a 26 year old game.

Yes, it is bizarre. Several The Lord of the Rings scenarios for Warlords II "survived" the movies and the games. It looks like the work of a bot used to take down everything related to Dune.
