For all of you who are waiting on GOG's re-release of Warhammer: Dark Omen (Shadow of The Horned Rat's sequel) - , I've got good news: there's a remake named "Dark Omen Reborn". It's been built with Unreal Engine 4, by a group of dedicated fans of the original and runs on Win 10 fine. They went great lengths to recreate all of the complex mechanics that made Dark Omen such a fun game (and most faithful recreation of Warhammer Fantasy Battles on PC bar Shadow of The Horned Rat), once again including morale system and fights based on dice rolls, calculated in the background by the computer, assuring smooth real-time action.
Dark Omen Reborn download link is in the description of the video.

Although this demo contains only the first level of the game, it's enough to refresh the memory of the games mechanics and compare it to its predecessor. You could also say that the Shogun: Total War, which came out roughly 2 years after Dark Omen used some similar ideas ;)

More information on how Dark Omen was taken apart and reconstucted by this team of skillful fanatics can be found on Dark Omen Reborn blog.

If you like to fiddle around trying to run old games on Windows (I know I do), have the CD copy of Dark Omen lying around and want to run it to experience the full campaign once again, I recommend reading Olly's Win 10 guide on the Dark Omen forum, which contains step-by-step instructions on how to run the game on modern machines.

This looks fantastic! It seems that it has taken them many years to get to the stage of a playable first mission. Do you know if they are still working on it? I can’t seem to access the blog.

Unfortunately it seems that the developement was suspended. Evgen has replied to this question in the linked video on behalf of the devs - they don't have enough manpower and are busy with their jobs / other commitments. I would love to see the whole game implemented this way, but I'm afraid that it's not gonna happen.

Regarding the blog, it seems that there were some changes to the Atlassian page since the time I posted, and it requires a log on now so I can't acces it either. It's a shame as the blog included some interesting information regarding the development and inner workings of the engine mechanics, such as the fleeing unit decision tree and "dice rolls" it used.

***EDIT*** It seems that blog is still accessible at: https://blackdogs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DOR/overview?homepageId=12525567

You can find some additional info (albeit very limited) in this thread at Dark Omen forum.

Yes, this was my fear. A real shame after all the work they had seemingly put in to the project but I guess real life gets in the way.

Thanks for this anyway, I appreciate the follow up and have given the forum thread a read through. To be honest I also was not aware of all the campaign and battle mods available either but since I haven't seen my Dark Omen CD since the early 2000s I suppose I will have to wait for GoG to pull their finger out.
Cheers.
I would be happy to contribute some money to the project. It would be great to have a remake which solved the bugs of the original port and maybe even has a chance to get rid of some of the old style problems of the original which can now be technically solved and on the experience of other games. Even nicer would be if out of this project, then also a translation of the Shadow of the Horned Rat bout be made :D

I feel you, if the devs of DO:Reborn would return to work on this remake, I'd also happily support them with some spare cash, but unfortunately it seems that the development ended. I think it would be the best if Games Workshop themselves have shown interest in a remake, but I find it very unlikely.
Moving Shadow of The Horned Rat to Unreal Engine would also be cool and solve many problems. I somehow made the GOG version to run on my Win10, but it gives a lot of trouble to many people.

I must say my love for GW has withered away already for some time. They seem more interested in $$ than in any community or game quality (not only with computer games, but also with the table-top games). In that sense I think a community-diven game is so much more interesting to me. Also when you see what an immense amount of content there has been produced for Dark Omen in the form of mods.

As I understand the project is dead. No updates for quite a while. And nobody else wishing to take over, right?

Unfortunately it seems that way.
*some necroposting here*

Main problem with this project is/was that nobody knows who owns the rights to original Dark Omen (attempts to figure this out were made more than once). Thus you can barely do any funding/crowdfunding in such situation. Game itself turned out to be quite complex whereas UE is very bad choice for an rts game (without many other options though). And since project required tremendous amount of time and was undermanned at the same time, the development has been frozen. If things will ever change (although unlikely), who knows, maybe the project will be revived.
