I don't seem to be able to equip the "Guardian Phoenix" or "Book of Hoeth" to anyone. Is this a bug?

No this is no bug. The hero who simply keeps them in his/her inventory gets the boni from certain items, like for example Book of Hoeth or Guardian Phoenix.

Sweet! Would have been nice if the tooltip mentioned that they worked from the backpack :P
