So far the game runs fine but does not detect or recognize the Xbox controller I use for many other games. Is there a configuration file that can be changed or an option that should work? So far this game is far better played with a controller since even the keys selected to do certain actions are either heavily delayed when doing combos or outright don't even work in combos.

Should work, but no 'Full support' - mouse+KB input requitrd to swtich default to GP

Requires mouse on the very first launch. Turn on your controller, go to Options > Gameplay Options and turn on the Gamepad On/Off option.
