Definitely, we play on the global gateway battle.net every weekend with friends and people from my twitch stream.
Here is a few things that could do the trick for you:

1) Check that you have registered your CD key using the (KeyChanger.exe) program in your game's folder or the launcher to do that. (you can find it in your library on the gog site)
2) Make sure your game is properly installed and that your registery is clean from previous installations (I am saying that because private server clients tend to also use the same registery keys as the official game they sometimes may remove your CDKey from it or just replace it with something else.
3) To play on battle.net you have to run the "classic" version of the game the other one will not let you play there.
4) Check that you have good enough bandwitdth and if not try opening your 6112 port on both UDP and TCP on your router. You probably will need that if you want to be able to host games and not just join them anyways. Also just for the moment you connect to the game try closing other applications using bandwidth.

Hopefully this helps!

Hey there IL I presume? :-)
You can find me on Youtube and Twitch under the same nickname as here which would be Trogallart. {Gnomish}

I know wc2 on ru is getting a lot of love lately it is always great to see people that actually care about the state of the game ;-)
No, im not il_war. Although he is mine gog-friend here, i still not so agreed with their repack version and server superiority (it now combined their and GOG solutions and compatible with Global server). But is more alive now, after Blizzard(+GOG) do changes with official Battle.net and Blizzard mess with it availability few times for both Diablo and Wc2 since 2019.

Now Global almost empty 0-2, while war2ru is up to 100 ppl online at same time sometimes.

wc2 ru is internationally populated. But it not true that official Battle.net for D1 or Wc2 been closed any past time, as il_war say previously. They be alive up to new Global server gateway. And been populated more than wc2ru. Probably old server still alive, im too lazy to check it with mine CD versions (we in russia sometimes have EU versions games on sold, sometimes at cheap price, i got Wc2 cd version re-release (dvd-box but with shortened printed manual with only tech staff +cd-key) at about 9 $ back in 2009, and about 20-25 $ for normal EU dvd-box copy with full-length manual). Been not available legal copy from il-war sayin is not true as well. Initial idea of wc2ru is just piracy, nothing else.

They did improve on the base product, in a way it is very close to what OpenRA did for C&C except for the not open source approach and the not so good relations with the original right owners.

That said I am just glad people keep playing the game regardless of where they play it. I for one stream/play on GOG every weekend and that is good enough for me. People that do not feel comfortable playing on private servers or just feel they are going to be roasted there can come hangout in my games for the time being.

But yes you are right GOG is pretty empty most of the time.
It been around 80-100 (usually more than on war2ru) ppl online on old EU server. And about 20-30 on Global in 2019 after release here. Since then Blizzard two or three times disable Diablo and Wc2 Battle.net Global server by mistake and take too much time to restore it. So looks like everyone moved to war2ru now.

Not everyone like I said I only play on gog these days and always welcome people to come tag along and play games during weekends. But you are right private servers have given the game much more love than what Blizzard or gog did so it is quite natural that players play where the game is actively being maintained and upgraded.
I wont leave the official GOG/Blizzard bnet though, first because not everyone is comfortable playing on pirated/private servers. And second the simple fact that we play there very regularly legitimates our continuous demands and stream of messages toward GOG and Blizzard over the current state of the game.
I download their reg-file, edit it (too much bckup servers 1 normal +3 backup) and now it looks like old EU, Global and war2ru servers for my *clean* GOG version.

BTW GameRanger support Warcraft 2, but only for Apple MacOS. Aas i understand, there is no way to manually add non-supported games.
