The steam version does not work with my computer.
So my question is, have anything been done to try to make this game work with modern computers?
I know gog gives refunds if it doesn't work but I don't want to go through with all that shit again.

What happens when you try to play it with Steam?
Please post your system specifications if we should be able to help you (and OS as well).
As Nirth said, it would also be useful if you could desribe the error it gives you (and whether Steam or the game itself is giving you this error).

All I can say is that our version does work or it wouldn't be released but since no one here knows what specs you have, it could be anything that cause the game to not work with your PC.
When I try to launch the steam version it simply crashes without any errors.
I use a pre-built laptop. Acer Aspire AS5750Z-4835
My point being that I've already spend half a day trying to get the steam version to work and I don't want to go through it again. I only wanted if its some kind of upgraded version or the non-working version (for me).
A quick search I would think it has something to do with Intel HD graphics. Have you tried legacy physx drivers? I didn't install those that arrived with GOG nor my Steam version before when I played but it works anyway (I've a Nvidia card though).

This thread or this might be relevant.
I downloaded this and during the install it tried to install the PhysX but said that I had a newer version and aborted.

If I try running the game it says "Can't load renderer library".

There's no option to install the older version of PhysX.
Installing the latest DirectX fixed it.

That's good. FYI, installing legacy physX drivers may be necessary for some games. I didn't need it for this but other games have required it.
I can confirm that I had to first delete Nvidia PhysX before the game would work. Otherwise, it would instantly crash on startup.
interesting. A few years back I had this problem and back then there was no solution. I just now tried one of the newer solutions and the game now starts.
Thanks for the help and looks like I don't need to buy the gog version
I am not certain if this is of any help but I would lean towards it being a graphics issue (as others have said).
I do know that it has worked flawlessly thus far on my Win7 / ATI Radeon HD 4850 system.
