By "upgrade" I can only assume that you need to purchase the original game as well. Is this correct and if so, why is there no mention of that on the upgrade page? Thanks.

There is - just under the screenshots there is 'TO PLAY THIS ITEM YOU ALSO NEED' and base game mentioned.

Anyway, afaik in order to buy the upgrade you have to own base game first, the shop won't let you buy only upgrade.
