I bought both just in case the 2nd one was a direct story sequel to the first one.

It is. I haven't gotten far in VH2 and I haven't finished VH1, so I don't know how much it matters, but they are connected, and VH2 starts sort of abruptly if you haven't adjusted to the interface already.
