I read there are two unofficial patches, one that adds content, another that just fixes the bugs. But what do you think is the best for my first playthrough?

If you plan to do multiple playthroughs, start with the default basic patch that is already included in the GOG version anyway. Afterwards install the plus patch with the new content to notice how unfinished the game was released...

Not really. At least not right away, I usually don't replay games right after. So by your logic, if I play with the new content, I'll have the best experience, right?

Snowstone: Not really. At least not right away, I usually don't replay games right after. So by your logic, if I play with the new content, I'll have the best experience, right?
I'd still start with the default basic patch in that case. The plus patch will be there if you decide to play the game again some time.

Yes. If you don't plan to replay anytime soon, start with the plus patch installed!

I'm playing this for the first time with just the unofficail patch - how much content are we talking about with the plus patch? Does it change the game that much?

It doesn't change the game much in matters of gameplay, but it adds seven new maps, a big new quest and even kind of a new ending where you join the Sabbat...
