I looked through the manual but there is not a word about how to open a closed but unlocked door. I am just doing the beginning tutorial thing where I have fed upon a human and now am told I must open this door, go inside and fight some guys but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to open the door. Running into the door with the arrow keys (I do not use the W,A,S,D set up) does nothing. Hitting the 'U'se key does nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Short answer: push the "use" button.

Anytime you put an object "in the crosshairs" so you're looking at it, a little icon will appear if the "use" button will do something with it. In the case of doors, just look at it until the little icon appears then hit the "use" button.

Advice: play the whole tutorial. It's fun, it has valuable story content, and it will give you a chance to figure out little things like this. Take the time to experiment. I suggest re-mapping keys until you feel comfortable with the control set-up. It will make the rest of the game more enjoyable.

I thank you for your help here and I will try this AGAIN to see if maybe I did something wrong the first time but as I said in my OP hitting the 'U'se key did nothing at all for the door. Will check it again now though and see what happens.
Note that unless you rebound the key, the "use" key is 'E'. Your post suggests that you are pressing 'U'.

It is also generally necessary to be close enough to the door to see the door icon appear toward the bottom of the screen.

If you still can't get it to work, check the game options from the main menu and see what the "use" action is bound to.
Also you sometimes have to wait a bit for the icon of that door to appear, especially if you cut Jack's speech short...

Yeah :). I think it's a simple timing issue! Troika wanted to make sure you don't leave while he is still talking...

I did rebind the key. Sorry for not saying that right off the bat.

In any case it is working fine now and the game is surprisingly good so far (even in the tutorial stage I am in). I typically hate anything to do with vampires these days and never cared much for the 'World of Darkness' stuff but this game so far has me wanting to play more so that is a good thing.

Thank you to everyone who chimed in here BTW.
