(this is my first ever playthrough)

So the mod is specified to work for all clans but after countless re-installs I realize only Ventrue appear to be able to possess random people. Or one of my stats is too low, not sure which.

I played a Gangrel up to right after you blow the Sabbat Warehouse and then stopped because the mod was making the taxi not appear. I might have installed it wrong the first time, I'm not sure. I'm starting over again at any rate and all those do-over showed me the fact above

I just want to know - when can you start recruiting people? I don't care about controlling nobodies, I got the mod so I could travel with NPCs I like or turn humans I like into vampires. When can I start doing that?

You should be able to get companions as anybody, though there appear to only be two that don't require you to be able to "possess" them. One of them you've probably already met - if so you should find out after doing the Elizabethan Rendezvous mission. She's also one of the few (I think two?) people you can embrace.

Possession doesn't necessarily require a Ventrue - most companions can be possessed with a number of different disciplines: usually dementation or domination, but some allow for using intimidation or persuasion. There's something called the Animus Constupro which can aid in this. Ventrue does appear to have the most options on who to dominate (though it's probably tied between Ventrue and Tremere, since they both have Dominate).
