It doesn't. It only recognizes controllers that use a DirectInput mode.

Would you know if that would include an old MS Sidewinder Controller?

If the controller was made before 2002, then it should work.

Thanks for the clarification, thats a big help :)
Have you tried something like Xpadder? :

http://www.xpadder.com/
I tried playing it yesterday with my wired Xbox 360 pad. It sorta worked. I couldn't map the triggers and the dpad in the options, but everything else worked. Movement controls were hardwired to the left analogue stick though and couldn't be changed. Which leads to my problem: There seems to be no deadzone setting in the options, and without that, the character spazzes around uncontrollably. It's very hard getting her to stop and stay in place. Unplayable in this state.
I'm trying to use xpadder to play this, since the game has tank controls the lack of analogue doesn't really matter.
Problem is, the game detects the stick, and its making the character walk backwards in circles forever.
Is there a way to force it to ignore the gamepad, so it only takes keyboard input? Thus making xpadder work correctly.
Finally bought myself a Logitech Rumblepad 2 aka F510. Just switch to DirectInput for old games. Eliminate all the undesirable side effect like spinning character, deadzone bug (Soul Reaver, Urban Chaos), usable triggers, analog stick and d-pad and for some game like Legacy of Kain Defiance it bring back the vibration effect. Let see if my new toy can outlast my soon to be 3 years old 360 pad.

ps: The control for this game still suck ass. Even with fully usable gamepad, it still doesn't feel right.
I just bought this game and encountered the same problem. Has anything changed? Is there any way to disable the controller support completely (to use xpadder)? Maybe there's some kind of file that could be modified or deleted in order to force out controller support?
