Hello GOG!

I just noticed after going through my backup, that you have removed the soundtrack for Uplink. It is now no more available to buy, nor am I able to download it. I was given Uplink November last year and just noticed, that I have downloaded a soundtrack archive, but if I hadn’t, there would not be any possibility to do so, or even to know that I had earlier.

I don’t like such behaviour. This is just not honest to your customers. It would be ok if a part of the extras was no more available to buy (then it would also be understable not be make a fuss out of it), but silently kicking out stuff to download is something I would like to be noticed about. Maybe a forum entry or a private message. It this would be in advance, even better, but also afterwards it would be at least honest. This is not the first time such a thing happens. (First time for me, though.)

Now personally it’s no big deal to me: I have downloaded the soundtrack earlier and currently there is an Introversion Humble Bundle running (which I also bought). There is the soundtrack available, FYI …

Just found out about this myself. Have already downloaded it, but I am not impressed. If this continues, I may need to consider taking my business elsewhere.
I had checked the downloads yesterday: GOG’s previously offered soundtrack included three bonus tracks that are not present in Humble Bundle’s version. So at least we got even more. Maybe there were licensing issues? But why not remove just the bonus tracks?

Have you raised a support ticket to ask?
All of the in-game music is actually freely available:

The Blue Valley
Mystique part one
Mystique part two
Digital Serenity
Deep in her Eyes
Symphonic

They're all module files, which is why so much music can take up so little space. Winamp, VLC, XMMS and several other media players support these formats (there's a list at the Wikipedia article I linked to).

You can also extract them from the music.dat file in the Uplink install (which is really just a ZIP file), but you'll need to fix the extensions for most players to recognize them (dedicated module players may still figure it out, but general ones won't). Apart from the extensions, they're 100% identical to the files listed above. Digital Serenity is an .it file, Symphonic is a .mod file, and the other four are .s3m files.

I have no idea about those three bonus tracks; as far as I can tell, the Humble Bundle is supposed to include all six of these and the game has never had more that those.

Ok, if the (standard) tracks are available (MOD format is cool), I will accept GOG’s decision in removing the soundtrack. About the bonus tracks, sounds like some licensing issues. One of the tracks was Mystique part three, the other two … I have to look.

Here's the problem; if they can do it with this soundtrack, can they do this with anything else? If so, I am downloading my entire library and reevaluating my decision to buy from here. God help them if it turns out this is illegal in some way, because if it is, then I may have to consider initiating legal action.

Yes, they can. They even did it with a game (the Mac version which seemed not to be licensed). But the real problem is not the removal of parts. The problem is the lack of reporting, of honesty and saying sorry.

I am downloading every extra and the Windows and Mac versions of games right after I bought them – even if I do not have a Mac. Just to be on the safe side. And I was right: not even 50 games in the last two years, and now there’s an extra missing already.

Hopefully GOG will learn and report things. I don’t want to make a fuss yet, there could be reasons for this. But not saying a word, even afterwards, that is not nice.

About legal actions: to be sure you would have to make screenshots after the buy, because afterwards you cannot prove that there would have been another extra. Good idea, I’m out, doing screenshots …
And while ZivilSword is off doing that, here's Mystique part three. The remaining songs - whatever they are - are most likely also on that site, so finding them shouldn't be too hard.

I would suggest that you download your library anyway. While I believe in the financial stability of GoG, it makes sense to have local backups in case anything goes wrong. As we all learned when they migrated out of Beta.

The remaining songs are here:
.pink noise
Clouds Of Fire

Wonderful, everything’s there.
Sorry for resurrecting the thread but seeing how this was one of the few threads staff missed to comment on regarding the issue, I'm pasting the Support response below. Rest assured GOG acts on its ideals, I personally experienced a few cases where titles were to be removed from the catalogue but the games I already bought have been left intact on my account. GOG warned all users beforehand and even ran a sale.
Hello,
I am afraid a mistake lead to the availability of the game's official soundtrack in our store as a bonus content. This mistake was quickly fixed back in 2013, unfortunately, some users already had download the tracks.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
Best regards,
Loris

If I am not mistaken whole soundtrack is under free license.

Its not composed by introvision, they just took it for commercial use.

Anyway, I recommend EnigmaTNG music instead of tried and true yet overused Carsten masterpieces (like jeans). Its darkwave-hackish. Btw, the ingame soundtrack is not even complete, you can find more of "Mystique" by the way on MOD pages.

Considering these lack of honesty issues, when I use GoG Galaxy and it installs the game, where is the installation file located or is it deleted after the install?

If I could keep the compressed installation files then if my game becomes corrupted and GoG has went bankrupt, I still have my game....

All games and extra files can be downloaded, even from Galaxy. Go to each game in your library and the option "Backup & goodies". You can use the downloaded installation files, and then import the install to Galaxy if you really want to use the game from there (Menu on the GOG Galaxy icon on the top left, option "Scan and import folders").

And the "lack of honesty issues" you were talking about is exactly ONE, this one, over five years ago. Excuse or not, they called it a mistake that the soundtrack was up for download at all, so removing it should not have been an issue, especially since it was not advertised as being included.

In any case, having your games in media of your physical possession (and then backing it up properly) is the way to go to ensure you do not lose anything; that goes for everything and every service out there, of course.
