I bought Unreal Gold off GOG a while back along with the other games in the series (UT99, UT2004, Unreal 2). While the UT games work fine, both Unreal and Unreal 2 have been nothing but a headache. Firstly, Unreal Gold won't launch no matter what I do. When I run it, I am allowed to pick a renderer, but no matter which one I pick the game just crashes (Unreal.exe has stopped responding). Sometimes I get the error shown in the PNG attached below. I've tried using Kentie's DIrect3D 10 renderer and tOldunreal's 227 Patch (separately of course), but to no avail. I'm hoping someone might be able to give me a hand in solving this little dilemma that i'm having.

In addition to Unreal Gold giving me problems, Unreal 2 also has an issue. For some reason the mouse is very jerky. Fine movements make it so that there is no movement whatsoever, but large movements are fine. It makes navigating the menus infuriating. The problem persists in gameplay.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix either of these, I would love to hear them.

System specs:

Windows 8.1 64-bit

16 GB RAM

2x GTX 680 2GB (SLI is disabled at the moment)

Intel i7 3770k OC to 4.5 GHz

ASUS Xonar DGX Audio Device

I would of said install Unreal and then 227i and you should be all good. I assume you aren't using the default windows driver for your gpu which aren't very good for opengl quite often.

Can you get Unreal working in safemode (unreal.exe -safe)?

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by default windows driver for GPU? I have the latest NVIDIA and MSI drivers for my card. Also, running in safe mode gives me the same error.

I was meaning the Microsoft Supplied driver, as opposed to the nVidia or AMD driver. In my experience the Microsoft driver doesn't work with OpenGL, but obviously this isn't an issue for you.
You've mentioned you've tried Kentie's DIrect3D renderer, hate to say it but perhaps make sure you installed it properly, maybe also check in the System\Unreal.ini file that it's set to use it looking something like this..

[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=D3D10Drv.D3D10RenderDevice

While in there may as well check the resolution by searching for FullscreenViewport

Also may be worth trying a newer OpenGL renderer if you haven't.

The error doesn't really suggest the following will help but might be worth trying to add a Data Execution Prevention exception for the game's Unreal.exe.

My Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention

Or a search should show you how to easily add the game there.

As for the Unreal 2 mouse movement, it sounds very much like mouse acceleration (don't even get me started on this nonsense). Basically moving the mouse slowly means low sensitivity and moving it quickly increases the sensitivity.

You could look here...

Or do a search for Mouse Acceleration + your OS

Hey, I know it has been a few years, were you able to find a solution? After a patch from Microsoft a few months ago, all of my Unreal games stopped working (Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex). Strangely enough, I had installed two copies of UT99 and only one stopped working.
Having the same problem here on Windows 10 x64. No matter what renderer (all of the stock ones along with the D3D10 thingy) I choose, Unreal Gold / UT99 will crash on startup with that standard ".exe has stopped working" dialog with no meaningful data in Windows Event Viewer or in the game's log file. Disabling DEP as hinted in some places on in the Internet doesn't help too. Funny enough that Mobile Forces uses the same engine generation and works just fine.

I'm not sure about UT99, but make sure you are using the latest patch (227i currently) from www.oldunreal.com
Had the same issue just a few moments ago, after i installed it again, and i solved the problem by changing the compatibily-mode of the unreal.exe to win98/me. you'll find the exe in the gamefolder \system.
Hope it will work for you too.
I have the game installed on Windows 10 x64 and I also have 227i patch installed but it crashes every time I run it with this message:

General protection fault!

History: UFireTexture::ConstantTimeTick <- UTexture::Tick <- (FireTexture NALIFX.SHANEFX.TORCHES2) <- UTexture::Update <- URender::DrawFrame <- URender::DrawFrame <- URender::DrawWorld <- UGameEngine::Draw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- Main Loop

I played it last time about a year ago on the same PC and so I installed the game again and it doesn't work.
I checked Internet for help but notning worked.

Any help please?

I had the exact same problem as you. While the solution of switching on Win9x compatibility will likely solve it, it's an indirect solution.

You must turn off DEP for all programs rather than choosing 'unreal.exe' as an exception. Apparently the fault lies elsewhere. Until the source code is released, the flaw will be unfixable. All this is also documented in the OldUnreal.com v2.27i documentation. You'll want to apply that patch if you want to do any online playing. You might wish to apply their multimedia patch as well.

I just tried to install Unreal Gold.

It did not work on my Surface 3 Pro (Win 10, 64 bit).
Tried a lot of things (written in the other postings above) but allways after the renderer screen it crashes.

To find out more I tried to install it on my other machine (Win 10,64 bit, notebook, Core i7 GPU Intel HD + NV 970 GTX) and on this it works with both gpus and with D3D and Glide/Voodoo wrapper.

I also tried to copy the working config to my surface but it did not help.

What is the problem with my surface ? GPU is Intel HD 4400 ?

I got the same error. I opened properties and compatibility checking and let it troubleshoot. It suggested XP Service Pack 3 so I tried it and it now works.
Unreal Gold would not even start running for me on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. However, selecting Windows XP Service Pack 2 (NOT 3!) Compatibility Mode and disabling DEP for the executable allowed what appears to be full functionality.
The GOG version of Unreal gold and the DVD Unreal version (Anthology) will still not work on my Surface Pro 3 Core i5 4GB, Intel HD 4400.

Tried a lot for example different patches and Glide and DX wrapper but it will not work on my surface.

Yesterday I got the steam bundle version of Unreal for 2 € and this edition is working without any problems !
D3D and glide too work with the steam release on my surface.
Using DGvoodoo I was able to add some 3:2 surface costum resolutions (1080x720).
