Multiple reinstalls of Unreal Gold and still can't get past this error after installing patch 227f. Error is quite big but here goes:

General protection fault!

History: UFireTexture::ConstantTimeTick <- UTexture::Tick <- (FireTexture NALIFX.SHANEFX.TORCHES2) <- UTexture::Update <- URender::DrawFrame <- URender::DrawFrame <- URender::DrawWorld <- UGameEngine::Draw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- Main Loop

I get that above error no matter what 3d driver I choose, nor whatever settings I choose for compatibility. If I try to run the game with just a standard install from gog.com, it tries to start but errors out with unreal.exe has stopped working. Anyone have any clue?

Anyone have any idea or anything I can try for this error? Been over a month now and still unable to play the game.
Looks like a corrupt texture, or your system having troubles with animated textures. That's about all my magic ball can say with the details you gave.
227f is an unofficial patch and is also not final. It's only in a release candidate version and it doesn't support Unreal Gold properly. If installed on Unreal Gold it will revert it to Unreal standard and you won't have the Return To Na Pali expansion working any more.

I'd steer clear of it for now and wait for 227g (if the project is still alive).

What are you after from the patch anyway? I've played it on 226 as provided by the GOG installer and it works fine. You can add additional renderers manually if you want them.

EDIT:

Oh, wait, just re-read your post and see you have an issue starting it from the standard GOG install. Well, that probably doesn't help with the patch either.

Anyway, I'd uninstall it completely first. Then check through the usual suspects:

Get the latest DirectX9 redistributable installed (latest one is June 2010 I think but when I played it I only had the November 2008 one so that should be okay too.

Once DirectX9 is updated install Unreal Gold from the GOG installer but install it to C:\Games\ or something, stay away from Program Files (Vista and Win7 have issues with older games installed in there so I just don't use that folder for games any more). Also, when installing the game, run the installer as administrator.

Once GOG's installer has installed the game, run the game as administrator.

Lastly, mine takes ages to start up (I think it's the renderer). It appears to stall on a black screen but it is actually working. Leave the computer alone for a minute or two if this happens. Don't try escaping or CTRL-ALT-DEL as this will crash Unreal and you'll be eventually be booted to the desktop. Instead, just leave it and it then gets to the main Unreal screen.

See if this works for you. Oh, and also try an update of your graphics drivers if this still fails. I know nVidia do work on getting older DirectX games working again, so it could be drivers.

bootz: I'm having the same exact error and issue
I've been meaning to reinstall the game and add it to the DEP list. If you currently have it installed, try adding it to the data execution protection list and see if that solves the issue. Otherwise, this game was $9.99 tossed in the toilet (for me since I can't get it working).
Are there any similarities between your system and its setup and with the system and setup that bootz has?

I'm just thinking that this is a very strange issue to have and now there are two of you who have reported it. Could it be that you both have Win7 (I'm still on Vista and it runs fine).

** CROSS POST HERE AND IN THE OTHER THREAD NAMED CAN'T GET UNREAL TO START **

I've done a Google search on NALIFX.SHANEFX.TORCHES2 and it throws up a number of results for this issue. It also appears that the news is good on two fronts.

Firstly, it isn't GOGs fault, it is an issue with Unreal Gold itself that affects the retail version too.

Secondly, many people are giving the same simple fix. Turn off DEP (or add Unreal Gold to the DEP exclusion list).

Here are the sources I've used:

I had a hunch it was a DEP issue. When I get caught up on some games and have time to give Unreal a go again, I'll give the DEP suggestion a try. Thanks.
Adding Unreal.exe to the DEP exceptions worked for me, thanks!
